How to maintain your white-coloured clothes in 2025

Maintaining white-coloured clothes, whether machine-washed or hand-washed, requires careful attention to washing techniques, detergents, and drying methods to keep them bright, crisp, and free from yellowing or dullness.

White garments can quickly lose their shine due to stains, residue buildup, or fabric damage. However, following the tips below can make all the difference, even with handwashing.

Separate whites and pre-treat stains

Always wash white clothes separately from coloured or dark items to prevent dye transfer. Before washing, inspect white garments for stains, especially common ones like sweat, deodorant marks, or food spills.

Similarly, pre-treat stubborn stains with a gentle stain remover or a paste of baking soda and water, or soak in diluted white vinegar before washing.

For handwashing, soak heavily stained areas longer in a mixture of water, white vinegar, or oxygen-based bleach, which brightens without damaging fibres.

Choosing the right detergent

Use detergents specifically formulated for whites that contain optical brighteners and mild whitening agents.

In 2025, eco-friendly and plant-based detergents are preferred, as they offer effective cleaning without harsh chemicals that weaken fabrics.

Whether machine- or hand-washing, choosing such detergents preserves fabric strength and longevity.

Handwashing your whites

Handwashing is ideal for delicate white fabrics labelled “handwash only” or those prone to damage in machines.

Here’s an effective handwashing routine for whites in 2025:

  • Soak: Fill a clean basin or tub with lukewarm water and add a suitable detergent for whites. For extra whitening power, include half a cup of white vinegar or a tablespoon of baking soda.
  • Gentle Agitation: Submerge the garment and gently swish it around, allowing detergent to penetrate fibers without scrubbing harshly.
  • Target Stains: Apply a baking soda paste or gently rub pretreated spots with fingertips.
  • Rinse Thoroughly: Drain soapy water, refill with clean, cool water and rinse the garment multiple times until no suds remain.
  • Avoid Excessive Wringing: Instead of twisting the fabric tightly, gently press or squeeze out water to avoid stretching or damaging the weave.

Machine washing best practices

For machine-washed whites, use warm water rather than hot to balance cleanliness and fabric protection. Choose gentle or regular wash cycles, depending on fabric type.

Adding boosters such as oxygen bleach or baking soda can help maintain whiteness. Avoid chlorine bleach unless for heavy-duty whites, as it can yellow fabrics if misused.

Drying your white clothes

Drying whites in the sun is a natural, effective whitening method thanks to ultraviolet rays that disinfect and brighten fabric. Many still air-dry outdoors or on drying racks indoors to avoid damage from high-heat dryers, which can weaken fibres or cause shrinkage.

When drying hand-washed whites, lightly roll garments in a clean, dry towel to absorb excess moisture, then lay flat or hang in the shade to avoid direct sunlight, which may weaken delicate fabrics.

Additional tips

  • Avoid fabric softeners, which leave residues that dull whites and reduce absorbency.
  • Wash white clothes more frequently than coloured ones to prevent invisible dirt buildup.
  • Use mesh bags to protect delicate white items when machine washing.
  • Check garment care labels for specific temperature and wash recommendations.
