Want a DNA test? Here’s how much it costs in Kenya

The topic of performing DNA tests, especially paternity tests involving children and men, has been trending in Kenya for a while.

This viral conversation has been fuelled by rising public curiosity, relationship disputes, and court cases that often hinge on questions of biological parentage.

In many households today, DNA testing is no longer viewed as a rare scientific procedure. Instead, it has become a common consideration in situations where trust is in question or legal clarity is needed regarding a child’s parentage.

Growing demand for DNA tests

Across the country, both peace of mind and legally admissible DNA tests are increasingly being requested by individuals seeking certainty.

These tests are usually carried out in accredited laboratories and medical facilities, with results used either for personal confirmation or court proceedings.

Cost for DNA tests

According to the Bioinformatics Institute of Kenya (KIBS), a prominent genetic testing facility in Nairobi that offers services ranging from paternity and prenatal testing to cancer genomics, the cost of DNA testing in Kenya varies depending on the type of test and sample.

“DNA testing in Kenya typically costs between Ksh15,000 and Ksh45,000, depending on the type of test and sample type,” KIBS outlined.

“The 24-marker DNA paternity test costs Ksh15,000 per person (total:Ksh30,000 for alleged father + 1 child). The 46-marker DNA test costs Ksh20,000. per person (total:Ksh 40,000 for 1 alleged father + 1 child).”

It is worth noting that legal DNA tests, often required in court cases, tend to cost more because of additional documentation, verification processes, and expert handling.

Why more Kenyans are taking DNA tests

The increased awareness, social media influence, and changing family dynamics have contributed to the rising demand.

In some cases, DNA tests are used to resolve inheritance disputes, child support cases, or long-standing doubts about biological relationships.

However, professionals also caution that DNA testing should be handled carefully, especially when children are involved, due to its emotional and psychological impact.

While DNA testing offers scientific clarity, it also raises sensitive social and family issues. As the trend continues to grow in Kenya, more people are turning to laboratories for answers that were once difficult to confront.

With costs varying across providers, many Kenyans are now weighing not just the price, but also the emotional weight that comes with seeking biological truth.
