For decades, the name Mbukinya has been instantly recognisable to thousands of Kenyans travelling between Nairobi and Western Kenya.

To many, it evokes memories of overnight journeys, festive homecomings, packed buses and emotional reunions with loved ones.

The company became a household name by connecting families and communities across the region, earning the trust of generations of travellers.

However, while many knew Mbukinya as one of Kenya’s most popular long-distance bus operators, few understood the story behind its distinctive name.

Following the death of the company’s founder, Paul Mburu Kinyanjui, interest in the transport firm has been reignited, with many Kenyans looking back at the legacy he built and wondering how the iconic Mbukinya name came to be.

The name Mbukinya was derived from a combination of Mburu and Kinyanjui, reflecting the founder’s family name.

What started as a unique business name would later become one of the most recognisable brands in Kenya’s long-distance transport industry.

Why generations chose Mbukinya Bus

Long before online booking platforms and travel apps became common, travellers relied on bus companies they knew they could count on. Mbukinya established itself as one of those dependable operators, earning the loyalty of passengers who returned year after year.

For many families, travelling with Mbukinya became a tradition passed down from one generation to the next. Parents who had grown up using the company later introduced it to their children, making it the preferred choice for trips home during school holidays, weddings, funerals and festive celebrations.

During Christmas and Easter, securing a seat often meant booking well in advance as buses filled up quickly with Nairobi residents heading to Western Kenya. Over time, the company became such a household name that simply telling relatives you were travelling with Mbukinya was often enough for them to know how and when you would arrive.

Memories that still live on

For many travellers, the journey itself was just as memorable as the destination.

There was the excitement of arriving at the booking office, loading luggage into the bus and finding the perfect seat before departure. Overnight journeys were filled with conversations among passengers before the cabin gradually fell silent as everyone drifted off to sleep.

Roadside stopovers became part of the experience, giving passengers a chance to stretch, enjoy a cup of tea, buy mandazi or roasted maize and prepare for the remainder of the trip.

Children looked forward to these journeys because they marked the start of school holidays, while adults cherished the anticipation of reuniting with parents, grandparents and relatives they had not seen for months.

Although Paul Mburu Kinyanjui is no longer alive, the transport empire he built and the memories it created continue to live on.

For generations of Western Kenya travellers, Mbukinya was never just a bus company; it was part of the journey home.
