Veteran businessman and Mbukinya Bus Services founder Paul Gatundu Muthumbi has been laid to rest at his home in Limuru, Kiambu County, with family, friends and leaders paying tribute to a man remembered for his contribution to Kenya’s public transport sector.

Hundreds of mourners gathered on Wednesday, July 29, 2026, to celebrate Muthumbi’s life and legacy, describing him as a visionary entrepreneur whose dedication, integrity and commitment helped build Mbukinya Bus Services into one of Kenya’s well-known bus companies.

Among those who attended the burial was Limuru Member of Parliament (MP) John Kiragu, who hailed the late businessman as a great son of Limuru and a respected leader whose influence extended beyond the transport industry.

“At his home in the scenic Limuru tea zones, we have gathered to give a befitting send-off to a great son of Limuru, the late Paul Gatundu Muthumbi (Mbukinya),” Kiragu said.

The MP praised Muthumbi for his commitment to serving people without discrimination, saying his leadership and business acumen left a lasting mark on the country.

“A remarkable patriarch, visionary businessman, and respected family man, Mzee Paul left an indelible mark on Kenya’s transport sector through dedication, integrity, and service to all, without discrimination,” he said.

Kiragu also remembered the late businessman as a humble, generous and wise leader whose values earned him the admiration of many.

“His humility, generosity and wisdom earned him the admiration of many and made Limuru proud,” Kiragu added.

He noted that Muthumbi’s legacy would continue to inspire future generations while extending his condolences to the bereaved family.

“His legacy will continue to inspire generations, and his memory will forever remain in our hearts. May God grant his family and friends peace, comfort and strength during this difficult time,” Kiragu said, quoting Matthew 5:4: “Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted.”

Muthumbi’s legacy

Over the years, Mbukinya Bus Services became a familiar name on Kenyan roads, transporting thousands of passengers across the country.

Mourners said Muthumbi’s contribution to the transport industry, coupled with his humility and service to the community, would continue to inspire future generations.

Paul Gatundu Muthumbi, who died aged 91, was laid to rest in an emotional ceremony, with mourners honouring a businessman whose impact on Kenya’s transport sector will be remembered for years to come.
