WhatsApp username rules you need to follow

WhatsApp is introducing usernames, giving users a new way to connect without sharing their phone numbers.

If you plan to create one, there are several important rules you need to know before getting started.

Basic username requirements

WhatsApp says every username must:

  • Be between 3 and 35 characters long.
  • Use lowercase letters (a-z), numbers (0-9), underscores (_), or periods (.).
  • Not contain only numbers.
  • Be unique, meaning no one else can already be using it.
  • Not include restricted words or phrases.

If your preferred username has already been taken, WhatsApp can suggest other available options through its username generator.

Your username is optional

Creating a username is not compulsory. Users can create one, change it, or delete it whenever they want.

If you decide to delete your username, WhatsApp will hold it for 14 days, giving you time to reclaim it before it becomes available to someone else.

How usernames protect your privacy

One of the biggest benefits of usernames is added privacy.

People who do not already have your phone number saved will see your username instead of your phone number. However, contacts who already have your number saved will continue seeing your phone number as they always have.

WhatsApp also lets users create a username key, allowing them to control who can contact them using their username.

Moving your username

If you change your phone number on the same device, your username can move with you. However, WhatsApp does not currently allow usernames to be transferred when switching to a different device.

Some usernames are also reserved for businesses, governments and public figures, meaning they may not be available for personal use.

Using your Facebook or Instagram username

WhatsApp also allows users to claim the same username they use on Facebook or Instagram, as long as it has not already been taken.

To do this:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap your profile.
  3. Select Create username.
  4. Choose Use Instagram username or Use Facebook username.
  5. Follow the prompts to link your accounts through the same Accounts Centre.

Adding WhatsApp to Accounts Centre is optional, and users can remove it at any time.

If different people use the same username on Facebook and Instagram, the first person to claim it on WhatsApp will get it. Also, changing your username on Facebook or Instagram will not automatically update it on WhatsApp. Any changes must be made separately within the messaging app.
