Five questions to ask before supporting any politician

Election seasons often come with colourful rallies, catchy slogans and ambitious promises. While campaigns can be exciting, they also offer voters a chance to look beyond the speeches and ask important questions before deciding who deserves their support.

Supporting a politician is essentially hiring someone to manage your resources, your rights, and your future.

To see past the political theater and make an objective decision, ask these five critical questions before giving any politician your backing.

1. What has this leader achieved before?

Campaign promises matter, but a candidate’s track record matters even more. If they have held public office before, look at what they accomplished.

Did they complete projects they promised? Were they accessible to the people they represented? Past performance can provide a clearer picture of what to expect in the future.

2. Are the promises realistic?

It is easy to promise jobs, better roads, lower taxes and improved healthcare. The real question is whether those promises are practical and achievable.

As a registered voter always remember to consider whether the candidate has explained how they will fund their plans and whether the proposals fall within the responsibilities of the office they are seeking.

3. Does the candidate have integrity?

Leadership is about more than making promises. Consider whether the candidate has demonstrated honesty, transparency and respect for the law.

As a law abiding Citizen always pay attention to how they handle criticism, whether they encourage peaceful campaigns and whether they are willing to be held accountable for their actions.

4. Will their policies improve people’s lives?

Instead of focusing on personalities or political parties, examine the issues the candidate is prioritising. Do they have practical ideas for improving healthcare, education, employment, agriculture, infrastructure or the cost of living?

Strong leaders explain how their policies will benefit ordinary citizens rather than relying only on slogans.

5. Are you supporting the candidate for the right reasons?

Campaigns often involve gifts, entertainment and persuasive messaging. Before making your decision, ask yourself whether you are choosing a leader because of their vision and ability to serve or because of short-term incentives.

And point to take home is that a vote is a long-term decision that can influence the direction of a community and the country for years.

Supporting a politician should be based on informed judgment rather than emotion, pressure or popularity. Reading party manifestos, attending public debates, comparing candidates’ ideas and verifying information from credible sources can help voters make informed choices.

Democracy works best when citizens ask tough questions and expect honest answers. Every election is an opportunity not only to choose leaders but also to shape the future.

As a responsible voter taking time to evaluate candidates carefully helps ensure that support is earned through leadership, integrity and a genuine commitment to serving the public.
