Getting placed into a university or technical college you did not expect can be frustrating.

Thankfully, the Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service (KUCCPS) offers an easy way out through the inter-institutional transfer portal.

The window for the 2026 placement cycle is currently open, giving you a chance to align your higher education path with your actual career goals.

Meeting the required cut-off points

Before rushing to make any changes, you must ensure you meet the minimum requirements for your preferred course. The transfer process is strict on merit and available space.

You can only switch to a programme if your Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) results match or exceed the cut-off points of the year you sat your exams. The receiving institution must also have a vacant slot to accommodate you.

KUCCPS confirmed the opening of this window to assist students who feel out of place, stating, “Were you recently placed in a university or TVET programme and wish to move to a different institution? Take advantage of the current 30-day inter-institutional transfer application period. Log in to KUCCPS student portal and apply for a transfer”.

The online exercise targets recent cohorts who want to modify their placements before admission.

Submitting your application on the portal

To initiate the transfer, log into the official KUCCPS students portal using your KCSE credentials. Navigate to the transfers tab, where you will enter the unique seven-character code of the programme you wish to join.

The system will automatically check your eligibility based on your cluster points. If you qualify, you will be required to provide a brief reason for the transfer request.

The placement service requires a non-refundable application processing fee of Ksh1,000 paid via the eCitizen gateway. Once the payment is verified, your request goes directly to the university or TVET institution you want to join.

If they accept you, they will endorse the application online. Your current institution will then receive the request to release you. The entire process is fully automated, eliminating the need to physically visit any office.

The 2026 transfer window closes on Friday, August 14, 2026.
