How a PVC pipe can keep water tanks clean during rains

When rains start across Nairobi, Kiambu, and other parts of Kenya, households rush to store every drop. However, months of dry weather leave house roofs covered in dust, leaves, soot, and bird droppings.
When the first heavy rain falls, all this dirt washes straight into storage tanks, turning thousands of litres of clean rainwater muddy.
How the first-flush pipe works
Keeping dirty roof water out of a tank doesn’t require expensive filters or chemicals. A simple setup called a first-flush diverter uses basic physical force to protect home water supplies.

Placed on the main downpipe before water enters the tank, this system uses a T-joint, a vertical PVC pipe, and a small floating plastic ball inside.
When rain starts falling, the very first water carries all the roof dirt into the vertical pipe. As this pipe fills with dirty water, the floating ball rises to the top and seals the opening.
Once the dirty pipe is full, clean rainwater flows straight into the main storage tank. A small drip valve at the bottom of the pipe lets the dirty water leak out slowly over a few hours, resetting the system for the next rain storm.
Keeping water clean and saving money
Scientific research backs up this trick. A study published in Water shows that “diverting the first flush, based on turbidity, total suspended solids, or conductivity, can improve the overall water quality” in roof rainwater systems.

Stopping the initial dirty water prevents mud, leaves, and sand from settling at the bottom of plastic or concrete tanks.
Maintaining this setup is easy for homeowners, landlords, and tenants. Clearing gutters of leaves allows water to flow easily through the pipes. Check the cap at the bottom of the pipe every few weeks to keep dirt from clogging the small drain valve.
Buying standard PVC fittings to build this setup costs around Ksh2,500 in local hardware shops. This small expense protects thousands of litres of clean water, saving households from paying for tank cleaning or repairing water pumps damaged by mud and sand.
