5 crucial gym equipments and their uses

Gym has become a hub for many health activities, especially for those who want to get in shape, build muscles or lose weight.

Many Kenyans, if not all, who are salaried, have learnt the art of setting aside a portion of their income to subscribe to a gym in their estates or nearby towns.

For some, the motivation is to stay healthy. For others, it is about improving physical appearance or managing weight. Walk into any gym today and you will find different machines designed to target specific parts of the body.

However, beginners often feel overwhelmed because they do not understand what each piece of equipment is meant for. Below are five common pieces of gym equipment and how they are typically used.

Treadmill

The treadmill is one of the most recognisable machines in any gym. It allows a person to walk, jog or run in place while controlling speed and incline.

Fitness experts widely use the treadmill for cardiovascular exercise, which helps strengthen the heart and lungs. Regular use can also help burn calories and support weight loss programmes.

The adjustable speed settings make it suitable for beginners as well as experienced runners.

Dumbbells

Dumbbells are simple handheld weights used in strength training exercises. They come in different weight levels to suit beginners and advanced gym users.

Common exercises using dumbbells include bicep curls, shoulder presses and chest presses. These exercises help develop muscles in the arms, shoulders and upper body.

Because dumbbells require balance and control, they also engage smaller stabilising muscles, improving overall coordination and strength.

Exercise bike

The exercise bike, also known as a stationary bike, mimics the experience of riding a bicycle while staying in one place.

Cycling on a stationary bike helps improve cardiovascular endurance and strengthens muscles in the legs, including the quadriceps, hamstrings and calves.

It is often recommended for people who want a low-impact workout, especially those recovering from injury or individuals who want to avoid excessive stress on their joints.

Lat pulldown machine

The lat pulldown machine is commonly used to strengthen the upper back and shoulders.

During this exercise, a user sits on the machine and pulls a weighted bar down towards the chest. The movement mainly targets the latissimus dorsi, the large muscles on the sides of the back.

Regular use can help improve posture and upper body strength, particularly for people who spend long hours sitting at desks.

Bench press station

The bench press station is another well-known piece of gym equipment. It consists of a flat or adjustable bench combined with a barbell rack.

When performing a bench press, a person lies on the bench and pushes a weighted bar upward using the chest, shoulders and arms.

This exercise is widely used in strength training programmes to build chest muscles and improve upper body power.
