How to effectively clean your sink to avoid bad smell

A smelly sink can quickly ruin the comfort of your kitchen or bathroom. Unpleasant odours usually come from trapped food particles, grease buildup, soap residue, or bacteria growing inside the drain.

The good news is that with regular cleaning and a few simple habits, you can keep your sink fresh and odour-free.

Here’s how to effectively clean your sink and prevent bad smells.

1. Start with surface cleaning

Begin by cleaning the sink bowl itself. Rinse away loose debris, then scrub the sink using warm water and dish soap or a mild all-purpose cleaner.

Pay close attention to corners, around the drain opening, and under the rim, where dirt often accumulates.

For stainless steel sinks, scrub gently along the grain to avoid scratches. Rinse thoroughly to remove any residue.

2. Flush the drain with hot water

One of the simplest ways to prevent odors is to pour hot water down the drain. Hot water helps dissolve grease and soap buildup that can trap smells.

Do this at least once a day in kitchen sinks, especially after washing greasy dishes.

3. Use baking soda and vinegar

Baking soda and vinegar are powerful natural deodorisers. Pour about half a cup of baking soda directly into the drain, followed by one cup of white vinegar. The mixture will fizz, helping to loosen grime and kill odour-causing bacteria.

Let it sit for 10–15 minutes, then flush the drain with hot water.

4. Clean the drain stopper and pipes

Drain stoppers often collect hair, food, and soap scum, which can rot and cause bad smells. Remove the stopper and scrub it thoroughly with a brush and soapy water. If possible, use a flexible brush or an old toothbrush to clean just inside the drainpipe where buildup commonly forms.

5. Deal with grease and food waste properly

Avoid pouring cooking oil or grease down the sink, as it hardens in pipes and traps odours. Instead, pour grease into a container and dispose of it in the trash. Use a sink strainer to catch food scraps and empty it regularly.

6. Freshen with natural scents

To keep your sink smelling fresh, occasionally grind citrus peels (like lemon or orange) in the garbage disposal, or pour lemon juice down the drain followed by hot water. This leaves a clean, fresh scent.

7. Maintain a regular routine

Consistency is key. Clean your sink and drain at least once a week, and flush with hot water daily. Regular maintenance prevents buildup before odours start.
