Kenya, being 80 per cent dominated by the Christian religion, clearly shows who the men of the cloth are.

They are respected, honoured and treated with utmost respect. But this, in most cases, comes with painful sacrifices and losses that many encounter, and it is not a must that anyone must encounter them.

You can know when he called himself and when he was called by the Maker Himself.

It only requires careful observation because toxic spiritual leaders always reveal themselves sooner or later. Here are signs that help you identify a dangerous Man of God before the damage becomes permanent.

Demanding that he be feared

A toxic preacher thrives on fear instead of love. He wants people trembling in his presence, not because of the power of God, but because of the power he gives himself.

His voice grows heavier when correcting people, and he positions himself as someone who must never be questioned. He expects bowing, kneeling, and exaggerated honour as proof of loyalty.

Instead of nurturing spiritual growth, he instils intimidation. When a leader demands fear, it is usually because he lacks true humility.

Healthy spiritual authority does not depend on terror. It depends on character, example and service.

Once a preacher begins to paint himself as untouchable, he moves away from the heart of ministry and into dictatorship.

Scriptural quotes to instil guilt

A toxic Man of God misuses the Bible for manipulation. He quotes verses out of context to make people feel guilty, ashamed or scared of consequences that do not exist.

He presents himself as the only interpreter of Scripture and convinces followers that their salvation depends entirely on obeying him.

Instead of teaching with clarity and compassion, he plants fear in the hearts of people to keep control.

Anyone who tries to question his interpretation is labelled rebellious or spiritually blind.

When guilt replaces genuine conviction, something is deeply wrong. A true servant of God leads with light, not with emotional punishment.

Controlling private life

Another clear sign is when a leader tries to control the private affairs of members. He wants to dictate friendships, relationships, jobs and financial choices.

He insists that God speaks to him about other people’s lives more than He speaks to them.

This creates dependency and weakens personal decision-making.

Such a leader pushes people to share intimate information, which he later uses to gain more authority.

Healthy ministry empowers individuals to think, decide and grow spiritually without being monitored like children.

Control disguised as “spiritual guidance” is one of the most dangerous forms of manipulation found in toxic ministries.

Obsession with money

A toxic preacher speaks about money more than he speaks about spiritual transformation.

Giving is no longer an act of worship but a compulsory subscription for blessings. He pressures members with testimonies, miracles and promises of sudden wealth that never come.

He subtly teaches that poverty is a punishment for those who do not give enough.

The church becomes a business with targets disguised as offerings.

True servants of God understand that giving is voluntary, gentle and rooted in gratitude, not fear or pressure.

Once money becomes the main agenda, the message becomes corrupted.

No accountability

A toxic leader answers to nobody. He refuses correction from elders, mentors or fellow ministers.

He positions himself as the final voice of God, making his decisions unquestionable.

Anyone who raises concerns is labelled an enemy of the ministry.

No human being is above mistakes, which is why spiritual accountability matters. When a preacher refuses oversight, secrecy and arrogance grow.

The absence of accountability invites abuse, both emotional and financial, making members unsafe.
