Here are 5 facts you should know before getting a BBL

The Brazilian Butt Lift (BBL) remains a popular choice for its ability to create a more curvaceous silhouette. However, informed decisions are crucial. Before considering this procedure, here are five essential facts you must understand.

It’s a major two-part procedure

A BBL is not a simple injection. It is a significant surgical process that involves two steps: first, liposuction to remove fat from donor areas like the abdomen or thighs.Second, fat grafting to purify and re-inject that fat into the buttocks for enhanced shape and volume. The goal is to improve your overall body contour by slimming one area while enhancing another.

Surgeon technique is a life or death safety issue

This is the most critical fact. The greatest risk of a BBL is a fatal fat embolism, which can occur if fat is injected too deeply into the muscle. A qualified surgeon must only inject fat into the subcutaneous layer (above the muscle) using blunt-tip cannulas. Always verify your surgeon’s specific experience, credentials, and safety protocols during your consultation.

The recovery is demanding and specific

BBL recovery requires strict adherence to rules for the new fat to survive. Most notably, you cannot sit or lie directly on your buttocks for about six weeks. Special pillows are mandatory. You must also wear a compression garment on the liposuction areas for several weeks to control swelling and help the skin contour. This commitment is non-negotiable for a good result

Results aren’t immediate or guaranteed

You will see swelling initially. Final results emerge after 3 to 6 months once swelling subsides and the transferred fat stabilizes. A percentage of the fat will be naturally reabsorbed by your body as this is normal. Maintaining a stable weight is key to preserving your long-term results, as significant gain or loss can alter your new shape.

You must be a suitable candidate

Ideal candidates have enough excess fat in donor areas to harvest, are in good general health. They need to be without chronic conditions that impair healing, be non-smokers, and have realistic expectations about the outcome and recovery process. A thorough consultation with a certified plastic surgeon is essential to determine if your body and goals are suited for this procedure.
