Sharon Chepkemoi: Emotional memorial held for Kenyan killed in road accident in Australia

Kenyans living in Queensland [QLD], together with close friends of Nakuru woman Sharon Chepkemoi, have held an emotional memorial service at the Victory Church along Redbank Road in Australia, following her untimely passing.

In a video shared on TikTok by Berur Queensland on Friday, January 2, 2026, Sharon’s casket, adorned with flowers, is seen being wheeled from a black hearse and moved inside the church, where it was placed at the front.

Emotional farewells and dirges followed, with Kenyans, particularly officials of the Berur community residing in the country, taking turns to mourn her, while others shared updates on the circumstances of her death.

In a separate video after the service, her maroon casket was carried by close friends and, as Kenyans and other friends surrounded it, was carefully placed back into the hearse and transported to the mortuary.

In the clip, people are seen standing along the sides of the church, clad in black, many waving as the hearse, with clear windows revealing the casket inside, drove away towards the highway.

Untimely demise

According to a representative of the Kenyan community living in Queensland who spoke during the memorial, Sharon Chepkemoi died in a tragic accident on December 26, 2025.

The official explained that there had been much speculation about the circumstances of her death and sought to provide clarity.

“The second thing I want to talk about is that there has been a lot of speculation around how Sharon died. Maybe I will briefly explain,” he said.

The representative said that Sharon had been travelling with a group of friends from Tuhumba to Brisbane in three cars to attend an event. They stopped at Rosewood around 7:30 pm.

“When I spoke to the friends who were travelling together with Sharon, there was a group of them driving from Tuhumba to Brisbane, and they were travelling in three cars to an event in Brisbane,” he shared.

During his speech, he also showed a video he had taken at the location where Sharon and her friends were trying to cross the road, which is a busy highway with fast-moving traffic.

He explained that Sharon initially remained in her car while her two friends crossed the road.

He added that at some point, however, she decided to cross as well and was tragically struck by a Ford Ranger, dying instantly.

“They stopped somewhere at Rosewood around 7:30 pm. I actually took a video of that place. In that video, you can see they were trying to cross the road, which is a highway with fast-moving cars. At some point, Sharon parked her car around 7:30 pm while the two friends she was travelling with crossed the road. She initially remained in the car, but for some reason, she later crossed over the road and was hit by a Ford Ranger. She died instantly,” he said.

The representative emphasised the importance of putting the incident into context, noting that it appeared to be an accident and that there was no malice involved.

The matter, he revealed, is currently under investigation by the Queensland Police and the Coroner’s Squad.

“I think it is important to put what happened into context. The matter is now being investigated by the Queensland Police and the Coroner’s Squad,” he said.

The representative added that it may take some time before all details are known, and there is a possibility that the full circumstances may never be completely clear.

“It will be a while before we know all the details, but for a fact, we know there was no malice involved. There is a possibility we may never know everything, but at least we should leave the matter to rest,” he said.
