Nina of Wapendwa Muziki opens up on facing postpartum criticism

Gospel singer Nina of Wapendwa Muziki, whose real name is Peninah Wambui, has candidly opened up about the wave of criticism she has faced both before and after giving birth.
She also shed light on the harsh realities of online trolling and societal pressure on women.
Speaking about her postpartum experience on the Joy Ride podcast in an episode aired on Friday, March 27, 2026, Nina revealed that the scrutiny has not stopped even after welcoming her child.
The talented musician noted that some people continue to comment on her body, especially her stomach, suggesting she should fix it so that she can have a flat tummy. However, she made it clear that she is no longer willing to entertain such remarks.
“Sahi watu wananiambia tumbo, sijui niende nifinye,” Nina revealed.
“And I’m like, aai it is never going to end, and you guys am not going to listen to you let me live my life; you people are bitter; it is too much.”
Cyberbullying before giving birth
In addition, Nina explained that the criticism has been constant, only shifting from one phase of her life to another.
Before giving birth, the singer says she faced equally hurtful comments about her body and fertility. Some critics questioned her weight, claiming she was too skinny to conceive, while others criticised her personal choices.
“Umekonda sana, mtoto ataka wapi na hiyo ukonde yote; stop trying too much, nani alikuambia uweke coil sasa unakuja kutulilia ende ulilie huko; sisi hakukutuma huko,” she narrated.
She further revealed that most of the negativity came from women.
“Women, 99 per cent,” Nina said, with her husband Mesh agreeing during the conversation.
The couple also spoke about the painful rumours they encountered while trying to conceive.
Mesh disclosed that he was labelled infertile, while Nina recounted how people speculated about who between them might be the cause of their struggles.
“Niliambiwa mimi ni tasa,” Mesh revealed
“Watu walikuwa wanasema ama ni Mesh? Ama aende atestitiwe pia yeye maybe ni yeye anafanya hamupati,” Nina added.
Despite the criticism, the couple has continued to share their personal journey online, inspiring others by opening up about their miracle and testimony after welcoming their first child, a boy.
