Karangu Muraya discloses amount Ruto gave him amid brother’s ICU bill struggles
Kikuyu gospel singer and social media influencer Karangu Muraya has revealed how President William Ruto and senior government officials stepped in to support his family financially during his late brother’s prolonged illness.
Speaking emotionally during his brother Paul Kariithi Muraya’s burial in Kagioni Village, Murang’a County, on Wednesday, April 22, 2026, Karangu recounted the financial strain the family faced as medical bills escalated while his brother remained in intensive care.
In a heartfelt address, he disclosed that the overwhelming hospital bill, which had left the family in distress, was ultimately settled with the help of President Ruto.
“And this person who has died is my brother, and all my family members who are here with me today cannot explain how the huge hospital bill he had incurred while in ICU was settled. And the bill was paid by Ruto, whom I recently visited, and that’s why I don’t regret going to Ruto’s place,” he said.
Karangu explained that his brother was initially admitted to Karima Hospital after first being taken to a hospital in Kikuyu, where the costs quickly became unaffordable.
At the time, he said, he was also facing intense online criticism related to family matters, leaving him overwhelmed and uncertain about how to proceed.
“And I remember my brother was first admitted to a hospital called Karima, and I remember I had also first taken him to a hospital in Kikuyu, but the bill was too much for me. And that time was when I was facing heavy trolling online because of my family, and I was stranded, and I did not know what I should do,” he added.

He noted that although insurance covered part of the expenses, it was insufficient to clear the growing bill.
“And there was an insurance which paid Ksh400,000 as part of the hospital bill. But at that time, the bill was already Ksh1.8 million, so it covered only the Ksh400,000. That time things were so hard financially because I moved him to another hospital,” he said.
Karangu further revealed that Deputy President Kithure Kindiki also played a key role in easing the financial burden by settling part of the medical expenses, sparing him the need to organise a public fundraiser.
“It was the Deputy President Kithure Kindiki whom I called, and he vowed to help so I would not do a fundraiser and get embarrassment. Even if Kindiki has never come here, he is the one who settled the bill for that one hospital for me,” he stated.
Addressing criticism over his attendance at a recent State House event hosted by President Ruto, Karangu clarified that his appearance was work-related and not a sign of neglect toward his ailing brother.
“And so recently, when we went to the State House, I had gone there as an MC, and I had left my brother in the ICU. So it is wrong to say he got sicker because I preferred to go to the Ruto State House event and leave him. That State House presence was just a gig for me. I needed that because I am fending for my kids,” he explained.
He also reflected on his past support for President Ruto, expressing gratitude for the assistance his family later received.
“So, President William Ruto, I remember I voted for him in this same place here where we are doing this burial, it is also a polling station. But that time when I was voting for him, I never knew he would personally come to my aid,” he said.
Paul Kariithi Muraya passed away after a lengthy battle with complications arising from a road accident, bringing an end to months of hospitalisation and intensive medical care.
