Janet Mbugua cautions young professionals about mentors who move too fast

Media personality Janet Mbugua has cautioned young professionals to be careful when choosing mentors, warning that not everyone who offers guidance has the right intentions.
She shared that mentorship can sometimes appear perfect at the start, but it is important to take time before fully trusting the relationship.
Janet said mentorship can easily look like everything someone has been waiting for. She explained that opportunities can appear quickly and feel exciting at first.
“Not everyone who pours into you is safe to receive from,” she said on Sunday, March 15, 2026.
She added that this is especially true when someone is in a mentorship relationship.

She explained that the situation can feel promising because it offers things many young professionals hope for.
“Because it can look like everything you’ve been waiting for. Access. Affirmation. Opportunity,” she said.
However, she noted that these situations can move very fast. According to Janet, the speed can make it hard for someone to pause and think carefully about the relationship.
Lessons from mentorship
Janet explained that over time, she has learned the importance of slowing down. She said she now avoids rushing into mentorship situations without first observing how things develop.
“But I’ve learned to pause,” she said.
She added that strong emotions or excitement at the beginning do not always mean the relationship is healthy. She warned that intensity can sometimes be mistaken for genuine care.

“Not all intensity is care,” Janet said.
According to her, some situations may feel strong at first but lack stability. She explained that this can become confusing when things later change.
“Some of it is not grounded. And when it shifts, you’re left trying to make sense of it,” she said.
Janet said her approach today is different because of what she has learned from past experiences. She now prefers to give relationships time before trusting them fully.
“So now I take my time,” she said.
She explained that consistency is one of the key things she looks for when dealing with mentors or professional relationships. For her, actions over time matter more than how things start.
“I watch for consistency. Not just how it starts, but how it holds,” Janet said.
