Gaucho reveals he first rejected Mama Lucy Hospital role before being convinced to take it

Calvince Okoth, alias Gaucho, has claimed that he was pushed into the Mama Lucy Hospital board role, saying he did not want the job and had even told those involved that he was not interested.
He spoke while addressing questions following the controversial appointment, which has drawn public attention. He explained that the process happened suddenly and without his full agreement.
In an interview on Saturday, May 2, 2026, with Alex Mwakideu, he said he received a late-night phone call informing him about the appointment before it was officially announced. According to him, the call came from a man identified as Fazul, who told him that his name would appear in the newspaper the following day.
“Juzi appointment ikifanyika nilipigiwa simu around saa tano saa sita usiku na jamaa anaitwa Fazul,” Gaucho said.
“Fazul akanipigia simu akasema niaje Gaucho, si jina yako ni Calvince Okoth? Nikamwambia ehh,” he said.
Gaucho insists he rejected the job
Gaucho said he clearly told the caller that he did not want the position. He explained that he had other plans at the time, including political ambitions and personal projects. He added that he was focused on building his life and income sources.
“Mwakideu niliambia huyo mtu, hiyo kazi, siitaki,” he said.
He further explained that he was thinking about running for MP and working on financial stability. He said he was also planning to build at his rural home. According to him, the timing of the appointment did not match his plans.
“Saa hii niko na mambo mingi nafikiria kuna vitu nafanya kwa sababu nataka kusimama MP, nafikiria kitu yenye inaweza nipea pesa, nafikiria kujenga pale ushago,” he said.
He claimed he was told the decision had already been made regardless of his response and added that he eventually had no choice but to accept what was happening.
“Akasema hapana by kesho jina yako itakua imewekwa, nikamwambia siwezi wapea mtu? Ndio nikasema sawa,” he said.
Gaucho also said he has been facing criticism over the appointment. He explained that people have been reacting strongly even though he never agreed to the role. He added that the pressure has continued since the announcement.
“Watu wananipiga deadly kwa kitu mimi hata sijakubali. Sasa mtu alinifanya nikubali hii kitu ni PS na mama (Ida Odinga) PS Raymond Omollo. Ndio wakaniambia Gaucho chukua hapo ndio tunaanza nayo. Then mama akaniambia kijana yangu chukua hizo kazi,” he said.
The appointment attracted scrutiny, with some mocking him using memes.
Despite the pressure, Gaucho added that he is ready to help change the face of Mama Lucy Hospital, rubbishing claims that he is not well educated.
