‘Wantam’ chants erupt at Vurugu 2 as crowd rejects Jalang’o’s chance to speak

A dramatic moment unfolded at the Vurugu 2 boxing event on Saturday, June 20, 2026, after attendees broke into loud “Wantam” chants as organisers attempted to give Lang’ata MP Phelix Odiwuor Khodhe, popularly known as Jalang’o, an opportunity to address the crowd.

The unexpected reaction happened at the Sarit Expo Centre in Westlands, Nairobi, where the boxing and entertainment event had brought together celebrities, musicians, content creators and public figures.

The moment began when a female master of ceremonies took to the stage to invite the legislator to speak.

“And now I want to take this chance to welcome MP Jalang’o. Jalang’o please come here for one minute,” the female MC said.

However, immediately after mentioning Jalang’o’s name, the atmosphere inside the hall changed as sections of the crowd responded with loud “Wantam” chants.

The chants continued as the MC attempted to proceed, with some attendees also booing in protest against the decision to allow the MP to take the stage.

The reaction grew louder, with the entire hall appearing to join in the chants as the MC eventually walked away from the boxing ring that was being used as the podium.

Despite the MC leaving the stage area, the commotion continued, forcing event organiser Oga Obinna to intervene in an attempt to calm the situation.

Obinna appealed to the crowd to shift their attention to entertainment, saying they would bring out performers as a way of settling the atmosphere.

“DJ Nickdee please. So now what we are doing, I want us to bring up DJ Nickdee to give us some entertainment and then after Nickdee we will call Khaligraph Jones to present, then Wakadinali after that,” Obinna told the crowd.

The intervention came as organisers sought to move the programme forward and restore the celebratory mood at the boxing event.

Jalang’o, who represents Lang’ata Constituency in Parliament, was among the public figures who attended Vurugu 2, an event that combined boxing, celebrity clashes and live music performances.

Other celebrities at the event included singer Nadia Mukami, Nigerian artiste Ruger, rapper Stevo Simple Boy, Senator James Orengo and Embakasi East Member of Parliament Babu Owino.

The incident happened during a night that had already attracted significant attention, with fans turning up to watch celebrity boxing matches, including high-profile clashes featuring entertainers and content creators.

Vurugu 2, organised by media personality Oga Obinna through Obinna TV Studios, featured a mixture of professional boxing, celebrity bouts and performances from some of Kenya’s biggest music acts.

The event featured fights involving personalities such as Arrow Bwoy, Shakib Cham, Gachau Njoroge, Fidphil Castro and professional boxers, while also bringing together musicians including Khaligraph Jones and other entertainers.
