Saumu Mbuvi announces bid for Nairobi Woman Rep seat

Saumu Mbuvi, the daughter of former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko, has announced her bid to become the next Nairobi County Woman Representative on the National Economic Development Party (NEDP) ticket.
Mbuvi said she had decided to offer herself for public service because she sees leadership as a responsibility. She explained that she wants to use her experience and understanding of people’s challenges to contribute to meaningful action in Nairobi.
“Today, I make a deliberate decision to offer myself for public service as a candidate for Nairobi County Women Representative on the NEDP ticket,” Saumu Mbuvi said on Monday, September 21, 2026.
Mbuvi said her decision was not driven by the title attached to the position. She explained that she sees leadership as a covenant with the people and an opportunity to turn lived realities into meaningful action.
“I am not stepping forward because leadership is a title. I am stepping forward because leadership is a responsibility, a covenant with the people, and an opportunity to turn lived realities into meaningful action,” Mbuvi said.
Saumu Mbuvi’s plans for Nairobi
Mbuvi said Nairobi has great potential, but many residents continue to face challenges that require more than political rhetoric. She said women need economic opportunities, while young people need access to employment, entrepreneurship, skills and innovation.
“Nairobi is a city of extraordinary potential, yet many of its people continue to face challenges that demand more than political rhetoric,” Mbuvi said.
She also said vulnerable families need stronger social protection and communities need leaders who listen and understand the data. Mbuvi explained that leaders should engage honestly and remain accountable even after the cameras are gone.
“Our women need economic opportunities. Our young people need pathways to employment, entrepreneurship, skills and innovation. Our vulnerable families need stronger social protection,” Mbuvi said.
Mbuvi said her vision is to see representation in Nairobi translate into results. She added that she wants women to be economically empowered and young people to be treated as partners in building the future.
“A Nairobi where young people are not treated simply as voters, but as partners in building the future,” Mbuvi said.
Her announcement comes after her sister, Sandra Sonko Mbuvi, also expressed interest in politics in May this year. Sandra, the youngest daughter of former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko, declared her bid for the MCA seat in Kitusuru Ward on the NEDP ticket.
Sandra, popularly known as Thicky Sandra, is set to compete for the Kitusuru MCA seat alongside other candidates who have declared their interest ahead of the 2027 elections.
