Onyango Tate shares mindset shift that helped him build wealth in his 20s

Content creator and Forex trader Onyango Tate has opened up about the mindset that transformed his financial life, revealing that changing the people around him and learning a new skill helped him become a millionaire at the age of 21.
Speaking during an interview shared on his Instagram page on Tuesday, August 4, 2026, Tate reflected on his journey from struggling to pay rent at 18 to buying his first Mercedes-Benz just a year after making his first million.
During the interview, he said making money at a young age gave him opportunities that many people only experience much later in life.
‘I made my first million at 21’
Tate recalled the financial struggles he faced as a teenager before his fortunes changed. He explained that although he came from a stable middle-class family, his parents encouraged him to work for the things he wanted beyond basic needs.

“The best thing that can ever happen to you is to make money when you are young. At 18, I could not pay my rent. At 21, I made my first million. At 22, I bought a Mercedes-Benz. This Mercedes is evidence of my hard work,” Tate said.
He added that his parents provided food, education, and support but taught him that luxury had to be earned through personal effort.
A friend’s advice changed everything
When asked how he built his wealth, Tate said his breakthrough came after a friend introduced him to Forex trading at a time when he was struggling financially.
He admitted that he was initially sceptical and even believed trading was a scam before learning more about it.
“My turning point to financial freedom came through a friend. He introduced me to trading as a business. At first, I thought Forex was a scam, but after learning the skill and understanding how it works, I realised it was the way forward. I’ve never looked back,” he explained.

Tate stressed that success in trading comes from learning the necessary skills rather than expecting quick profits.
The people around you matter
The young entrepreneur also said changing his mindset was just as important as learning how to trade.
According to him, spending time with ambitious people pushed him to believe that financial success was possible.
“I never imagined I would become successful. Like many young people, I thought a good life was meant for a certain group of people. My friend changed my mindset,” he said.
He added that the company people keep often influences the goals they set for themselves.
“If you surround yourself with people who are less ambitious, you will also become less ambitious,” Tate noted.

Advice to young people
Tate encouraged young people to focus on building skills and creating wealth before rushing into expensive lifestyles.
He acknowledged that many people buy luxury items immediately after making money but believes financial growth should remain the priority.
He concluded by encouraging young people to invest in opportunities that can improve their future, saying that earning money early in life gives people more time to build lasting wealth and create the life they want.
