Actor and filmmaker Nick Mutuma has offered a Ksh100,000 reward for information that could help recover film equipment recently stolen from him, drawing attention to the growing concern over theft of valuable creative equipment in Nairobi.

The filmmaker shared the appeal on his social media platforms, asking members of the public to come forward with any information that could help identify those behind the theft or lead to the recovery of the equipment.

Mutuma said the stolen items are important to his work, highlighting the financial and professional impact that the loss of production equipment can have on people working in Kenya’s creative industry. Cameras, lighting equipment and other filmmaking tools can cost millions of shillings, making them valuable targets for thieves while also being essential for filmmakers to continue producing content.

The actor’s decision to attach a Ksh100,000 reward to the appeal has also sparked conversations about the challenges creatives face when their equipment is stolen. Unlike ordinary personal belongings, professional production equipment is often directly connected to a person’s ability to work and earn an income.

The incident reportedly occurred after equipment was taken from a vehicle in Nairobi. Mutuma has since turned to the public in an effort to increase the chances of recovering the items.

His appeal comes at a time when Kenya’s film and digital content industry continues to expand, with more actors, directors, photographers and content creators investing heavily in professional equipment. For many creatives, such equipment represents years of investment and is difficult to replace immediately.

Cost of protecting equipment

By offering the reward, Mutuma is hoping that someone with useful information will be encouraged to speak up. He has urged anyone who may have seen the equipment, know where it is, or have information about the people involved to provide the relevant details.

The case has also renewed discussion about security for expensive creative equipment, particularly when it is transported or temporarily left inside vehicles. Creatives often move between filming locations carrying cameras, lenses, lighting equipment and other valuable tools, making security an important consideration.

For now, Mutuma’s focus appears to be on recovering the stolen equipment and getting answers. The Ksh100,000 reward could provide an incentive for someone with credible information to come forward, while the incident serves as another reminder of the risks faced by Kenya’s growing creative community.
