Nairobi County’s Environment Chief Officer, Geoffrey Mosiria, has issued a warning to job seekers after a young man from Mombasa reportedly lost money in a suspected job scam in Nairobi.

According to Mosiria, the victim narrated how he was lured through an online platform by an individual who promised him a plumbing job in Nairobi but later demanded an upfront payment for document processing fees.

“Yesterday, this young man visited my office with a very sad story. He lives in Mombasa and, through an online platform, met someone who promised him a plumbing job in Nairobi. However, he was asked to pay Ksh 5,000 upfront for document processing,” Mosiria wrote.

In a statement shared on his official social media pages on Tuesday, June 16, 2026, Mosiria, the young man, refused to send money initially but was later persuaded to travel to Nairobi to finalise the opportunity in person.

The chief officer added that the man took a loan and travelled to the capital city, where he was received by a lady and taken to a hotel as they waited for further arrangements.

“The young man refused, insisting that he could not send money to a stranger. He was then advised to travel to Nairobi so that the job opportunity could be processed in person,” he added.

Desperate for employment, he hurriedly took a loan and travelled to Nairobi. Upon arrival, he was received by a lady, and together they went to a hotel to wait.

Scammed in Nairobi

Mosiria went on and narrated that while at the hotel, he was told he could order anything, with assurances that the bill would be settled later. Shortly after, the recruiter arrived and again requested Ksh 5,000, claiming it was required to process the job.

Believing the opportunity was legitimate after meeting them physically, the young man handed over the money.

“While there, he was told to order anything he wished, as the bill would be settled later. After some time, the person who had promised him the job arrived and again requested the Ksh 5,000. Since they had now met physically, the young man believed the offer was genuine and handed over the money,” he wrote.

“Food was ordered, and as they continued with their discussions, the young man was told to remain at the hotel while the job processing was being finalised. Trusting them, he agreed.”

According to Mosiria, the young man was then instructed to remain at the hotel as the job process was being finalised. However, hours passed without any return from the individuals who had approached him, raising suspicion.

It was at this point that he realised he had been conned.

“Hours passed, but the two never returned. That is when he realised he had fallen victim to a scam,” he added.

Unpaid hotel bill

Additionally, he said that the young man was left with the hotel bill, which had accumulated to Ksh 4,300, and he was unable to pay. Adding that the hotel management confiscated his phone, leaving him stranded.

“To make matters worse, he was left with a hotel bill of KSh 4,300, which he could not afford to pay. The hotel management confiscated his phone, marking the beginning of his troubles,” he wrote.
