Kenyan comedian Eddie Butita has humorously called out people who return to Kenya from abroad but continue posting pictures and videos that make it appear as though they are still overseas.

In a video shared on Instagram, Butita joked about a habit he says is common among some Kenyans who travel outside the country. According to the comedian, some people return home but continue sharing travel content for weeks, leaving their friends and followers convinced that they are still abroad.

Butita questioned the idea of continuing to post pictures from a foreign trip long after coming back to Kenya. He joked that someone could already be back in their village while people online are still convinced that they are enjoying life overseas.

Are you still abroad?

The comedian also pointed out the effect such posts can have on other people. Someone following the posts may feel jealous, believing their friend is still travelling, enjoying foreign destinations and experiencing a lifestyle they can only see online. Yet, behind the scenes, the person creating that impression may already be back home.

Taking the joke further, Butita said he would have people at the airport keeping an eye out for Kenyans arriving back in the country. He humorously suggested that once someone is spotted returning, their arrival could be revealed online, effectively exposing the fact that they are no longer abroad.

His comments highlight a common social media practice where people post photographs and videos at different times from when they were actually taken. Someone can therefore appear to be constantly travelling even when the trip ended days or weeks earlier.

The comedian’s remarks also touch on the way social media can influence how people view the lives of others. Carefully selected photographs can create the impression that someone is always on holiday, living luxuriously or enjoying opportunities outside the country.

The deceipt

For followers, it can be difficult to know whether a post reflects what is happening in real time or is simply older content being uploaded later. This can contribute to unnecessary comparisons, especially when people measure their own lives against what they see online.

Butita delivered the observation through comedy, turning the situation into a joke about people who seem determined to remain abroad on social media even after physically returning to Kenya.

His remarks serve as a lighthearted reminder that social media does not always show the full picture. Sometimes, the person appearing to be thousands of kilometres away may actually be much closer than their latest post suggests.
