Chaxy opens up on why he made his nickname his legal name

Mic Cheque podcaster Chaxy has opened up about his decision to make his longtime nickname “Chaxy” his legal name.

Speaking during an interview on Sunday, August 30, 2026, Chaxy said he had been using the name since primary school, long before he decided to make it official.

He explained that Chaxy was the name he used among his peers, while the other name he had previously gone by had been given to him by his grandmother as a baptismal name.

Chaxy said he had never been particularly fond of the name he was given and began thinking about changing it while he was still in high school.

He recalled discovering that it was possible to legally change, add or remove names, an idea he kept in mind until he became an adult.

“As soon as I was of legal age and I could afford it, I made Chaxy official,” he said.

The podcaster said the decision was also influenced by the fact that Chaxy was already the name people knew him by.

He had used it for years, making the legal change a way of aligning his official identity with the name he had already embraced.

Grandma backed decision

Chaxy revealed that his previous name was given to him by his grandmother as a baptism name when his family was originally Catholic.

However, he said he never liked the name and was also uncomfortable with the person he had been named after.

He was asked whether his grandmother knew that he did not like the name.

“Yeah,” he said, explaining that she was aware and that he had also been known by a nickname at home.

Chaxy said his grandmother was still alive when he eventually made the decision to change his official name and supported him.

“She was like, yeah, you’re of age now, do whatever you want,” he recalled.

The podcaster described his grandmother as someone he was close to, making her support significant as he went through the decision.

Making Chaxy official

Chaxy said the process of making the name official involved a deed poll and updating his documents.

He explained that changing the name across different government records was the more difficult part of the process.

According to him, the name change meant he had to provide supporting documents when updating his records and applying for official documents.

He noted that while changing names is a common process, particularly in situations such as marriage, navigating the government offices involved could be challenging.

Once the process was completed, however, Chaxy said the name appeared across his official documents.
