Jesus Compassion Ministries (JCM) founder Benson Gathungu, popularly known as Bishop Kiengei, has appealed for donations to support victims of the recent floods reported across the city.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, March 10, 2026, after meeting people whose lives were disrupted by the fatal floods, the popular preacher disclosed that his church has opened its doors to those affected by the floods, and he needs help to offer support to them as they rebuild their lives afresh.

“These rains have deeply affected many people in Kenya 🇰🇪. Houses have submerged properties destroyed and people have shifted…Today at JCM CHURCH INT’L HQ’S, we have received victims of the downpour,” the preacher stated.

He listed the items that are required urgently and urged well-wishers to respond to the appeal and share whatever they have in aid of the victims.

“Please, I am appealing to you, if you have clothes, bedding, and hygiene stuff that you can share. Visit the LORD’S STORE, and we will reach out to the needy,” he said.

He rallied people to be compassionate at this time, emphasising that every donation goes towards making life better for someone in dire need.

“It might be old to you, but new to someone, let’s be compassionate, especially to everyone around us who is in need,” he added.

Deadly floods leave trail of destruction in Nairobi

The country witnessed a fatal wave of flooding on Friday, March 6, 2026, with Nairobi city being the hardest hit.

More than forty lives were lost in the tragedy, with scores left battling for their lives in the hospital.

The floods also left a wave of destruction in their wake, with property whose value is estimated in the hundreds of millions lost.

Governor Johnson Sakaja found himself on the receiving end of the wrath of Kenyans as many called out his administration for doing little to remedy the situation.

The floods exposed a system that was ill-prepared and ill-equipped to respond to the tragedy that came after just a few hours of rainfall in the city.

Sakaja speaks amid public fury over floods

In an interview with a local TV station following the floods, Sakaja advocated for both the county government and the national government to acquire boats.

“The boats are quite necessary. If you go to Infinity in Mwiki in Kasarani, the only way people were rescued was by using boats,” Sakaja said.

He said that the city’s challenges with floods date back to 1992.

“There is no quick fix for this city; it is not possible. I was born in this city. A lot of what we are doing is catching up with how derelict it was from 1992. The city is growing. We are dealing with a generational infrastructure deficit, drainage built for 500,000 people, planning and development control for a smaller city than we have today,” Sakaja said.
