The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has nabbed key persons of interest following a phone theft operation within the Nairobi Central Business District (CBD).

According to a report by DCI on Wednesday, August 6, 2025, the agency revealed that officers from Central Police Station apprehended a key person of interest who has been identified as Victor Kimani.

Following the report, Kimani was apprehended in an intelligence-led operation, further adding that Kimani is linked to a notorious phone theft syndicate operating within Nairobi CBD and its environs.

“In an intelligence-led operation, officers from the Central Police Station have arrested Victor Kimani, a key suspect linked to a notorious phone theft syndicate operating within Nairobi’s Central Business District and its surrounding areas,” DCI revealed.

Similarly, the DCI has revealed that at the time of his apprehension, Kimani was busted into tampering with the IMEI of the stolen phones in what the authority say was an attempt to conceal the phones’ identity.

Kimani’s accomplices

The authorities have further unveiled that just after Kimani was busted in, a quick interrogation was held, leading the detectives to a business centre where two of his accomplices were nabbed.

DCI has revealed that Kimani was working closely with two partners who were identified as Marvine Wangundo and Jeremiah Njoroge.

“Kimani was nabbed in the CBD while tampering with the IMEI numbers of stolen phones in an attempt to conceal their identity. Following a brief interrogation, he led detectives to Intermark Business Centre, where two of his alleged accomplices, Marvine Wangundo and Jeremiah Njoroge, were also apprehended,” DCI stated.

Detectives have further revealed that after a thorough search, at least seventy phones were recovered, alongside other computer devices. In addition, the detectives stated that most of the devices had been stripped of their back covers.

“A subsequent search of the premises yielded a haul of stolen electronics, including: 36 Samsung phones, 23 Vivo phones, 2 Nokia phones, 1 LG phone, 1 HMD phone, 1 Tecno phone, 1 Motorola phone, 6 M-Kopa Samsung phones, 2 M-Kopa Nokia phones, 2 Vivo motherboards, many of them stripped of their back covers. Also recovered were 2 Dell CPUs, 2 HP Elite CPUs, and 1 desktop computer, among other items,” DCI said.

Notably, according to DCI, the suspects are currently in custody as detectives finalise investigations ahead of their arraignment in court.
