Homa Bay County Deputy Governor Oyugi Magwanga has spoken after an incident on Sunday, May 11, 2025, where police officers attached to his security detail fired at least six rounds near his home in Kasipul Constituency.

Speaking to the press at his home on Monday, May 12, 2025, after the incident, Magwanga stated that he had received information that he was being trailed on Sunday evening when he decided to use a different route to get to his home.

“While on my way back home, I got wind that I was being trailed. Upon receiving this information, I decided to take a detour, which saw me arrive at my home from the opposite side,” the deputy governor said.

“My security detail, however, used the normal route and met with the suspected individuals a few metres from my home. My security detail fired the first shot on seeing the individuals hiding in a thicket, and on firing the second, they took off while exchanging fire with my security,” he revealed.

Attempt on his life

Magwanga indicated that while he had prior information on attempts on his life, he had taken them lightly, but not anymore.

“At first, I had taken it lightly, but in light of what has happened, I have resolved to take necessary steps,” Magwanga stated

He has appealed to the residents of Homa Bay County to remain peaceful even as the development comes just weeks following the shooting dead of Kasipul MP Ong’ondo Were by an unknown assailant along Ngong Road on April 30, 2025.

“I am appealing to the residents of Homa Bay County to remain peaceful and desist from talks that may lead to commotion in Kasipul Constituency and the entire county,” Magwanga said.

Police report

A police report seen by K24 Digital revealed that Magwanga’s driver and bodyguard encountered two individuals hiding in a bush some 300 metres away from the home when they stopped to inquire about their identities.

However, the men fled into a nearby river, and the security detail fired four times in the direction of the two people. On hearing the gunshots, a police officer guarding the deputy governor’s residence also fired two rounds in the air.

“The driver stopped the vehicle, and as the police officer stepped from the vehicle to enquire who they were, they dashed towards the nearby river and disappeared, forcing the officer to shoot up in the air to thwart any attempts to breach their security,” the police report reads.

Contradicting statement

While Magwanga says that the individuals exchanged fire with his security detail while fleeing, officers from Oyugis Police Station, who combed the area after the incident, failed to retrieve any spent cartridges to substantiate the claim.

“Officers from Oyugis police station and DCI Rachuonyo South in company of the OCS visited the scene which is about 7 kilometers from the station, and established that the Deputy Governor was not in the company of Security personnel and driver at the time of the incident, and that the bodyguard fired four rounds from his Jericho pistol the officer guarding Magwanga’s home fired two rounds from his G3 rifle,” the report indicated.

The statement recorded by Magwanga’s security detail, who fired the shots, indicates no exchange of fire from the two people who escaped towards the river near the leader’s home.
