Police seize bhang worth Ksh4.7M in Kakamega

Police have recovered bhang worth nearly Ksh5 million in Kakamega County following a thorough search in a bid to combat drug trafficking in the county.

In a statement released on Wednesday, August 13, 2025, the National Police Service has revealed that the bhang intercepted weighed at least 159.15 kg.

Police have noted that the consignment, which was recovered along the Kakamega-Mumias Road on Tuesday, August 12, 2025, was found inside an abandoned black Toyota Fielder motor vehicle.

“Bhang weighing 159.15 kg was recovered by the police in Kakamega. On 12 August 2025, National Police Service officers on patrol along the Kakamega-Mumias Road recovered an abandoned black Toyota Fielder motor vehicle,” NPS said.

Likewise, the National Police Service has noted that upon inspection, the vehicle was found to contain seven large bags packed with bhang, with an estimated street value of KSh 4,774,500.

On the other hand, the police are yet to identify the owner of the motor vehicle as well as the consignment.

“Upon conducting a search, the officers discovered bhang packed in seven bags, weighing 159.15 kg with an estimated street value of Ksh4,774,500. The vehicle was towed and detained at Kakamega Police Station pending further investigations to identify the owner,” NPS revealed.

The National Police Service has reaffirmed its dedication to disrupting the illegal drug trade and ensuring the safety and well-being of citizens. Authorities have urged the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities that may be linked to narcotics or organised crime.

“The National Police Service reiterates its unwavering commitment to combating narcotics and related criminal activities,” NPS noted.

The vehicle was towed to Kakamega Police Station, where it is being held as investigations continue to establish its owner and uncover the trafficking network behind the consignment.

Tigoni bhang crackdown

Meanwhile, police across various parts of the country are working to combat illegal drugs in the country. Police have similarly apprehended a key person of interest in possession of bhang following a well-coordinated intelligence-led operation in Tigoni.

According to the police report, the person of interest was apprehended in Karambaini Tea Zone in Kiambaa Sub-County on Tuesday, August 12, 2025.

The National Police Service, in a statement released on Wednesday, August 13, 2025, revealed that the person of interest was found with at least 800 rolls of cannabis.

“On 12 August 2025, Tigoni police officers, acting on intelligence, arrested a suspected drug trafficker in Karambaini Tea Zone, Kiambaa Sub-County,” NPS said.

The police have revealed that at the time of his apprehension, the person of interest, who was using a TVS Star motorcycle, posed as a khat transporter to disguise his illegal trade.
