Tottenham vs Newcastle: Match preview and key stats

Tottenham Hotspur will welcome Newcastle United to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Saturday evening, August 29, 2026, as both sides look to claim their first Premier League victory of the 2026-27 campaign.

The game, scheduled for a 5:30 pm British time kick-off, comes just days after the two clubs progressed to the third round of the EFL Cup.

Newcastle will head into the contest with plenty of confidence from recent meetings, having won each of their last two Premier League visits to Tottenham by the same 2-1 scoreline. Their most recent success in North London came in February last season.

Tottenham looking to bounce back

Tottenham endured a nightmare beginning to their league campaign under Roberto De Zerbi, suffering a convincing 3-0 defeat away to Brentford despite fielding four summer arrivals in their starting XI.

The London club quickly put that disappointment behind them, though, producing an impressive response in midweek with a 5-1 victory over Charlton Athletic in the EFL Cup.

Savio, Tottenham’s £85m (approximately Ksh14.79 billion) signing, made an immediate impression after coming off the bench, scoring once and creating another goal. Mikey Moore, Dominic Solanke, Kevin Danso and Ben Davies were also on target as Spurs comfortably progressed to a third-round meeting with Liverpool.

Tottenham now return their attention to the Premier League, where they will be desperate to avoid opening a campaign with successive defeats for the first time since 2011-12.

The club also have a remarkable home record in opening league fixtures. Spurs have won their first home league game in each of the last five seasons, scoring 14 goals while conceding just once during that sequence.

Their longest such run came between the 1923-24 and 1933-34 seasons, when they won their opening home fixture 11 consecutive times.

Recent encounters with Newcastle, however, provide cause for concern. Tottenham have lost six of their last eight Premier League clashes with the Magpies, recording only one victory and one draw during that stretch. They have also failed to shut out Newcastle in their last 14 league meetings.

Newcastle aiming to build momentum

Newcastle were agonisingly close to beginning their league campaign with three points, but a late penalty conceded in the 99th minute allowed Liverpool to rescue a 2-2 draw.

They were then forced to work hard again in midweek before eliminating Championship side West Bromwich Albion 3-2 in the EFL Cup at St James’ Park.

Before that match, Newcastle supporters received confirmation of the club’s £50m (approximately Ksh8.79 billion) acquisition of Nico Gonzalez. Another new arrival, Bazoumana Toure, then gave the home crowd further reason to celebrate by scoring his first goal for the club.

Harvey Barnes completed the job after the interval with two goals, sending Newcastle into a third-round meeting with Millwall.

New manager Matthias Jaissle has welcomed the enthusiasm generated by the supporters and wants his young squad to provide entertaining football throughout the season. That represents a significant change following Newcastle’s disappointing 12th-place finish last term under former boss Eddie Howe.

Newcastle’s away form remains a major concern, however. Since the beginning of 2025-26, they have surrendered 29 points from winning positions in the Premier League, the highest total in the division.

They have also managed only four victories in their last 22 league matches away from home, alongside six draws and 12 defeats.

Tottenham have nevertheless been one of Newcastle’s favourite away opponents historically. The Magpies have won 13 Premier League matches at Spurs, more than against any other side on the road. They have also triumphed in three of their last four visits to Tottenham, with one defeat.

Team news

Tottenham are expected to be without Xavi Simons, Dejan Kulusevski and Wilson Odobert, all of whom are recovering from knee injuries.

James Maddison is a doubt because of a shoulder problem and will face a late fitness test.

Pape Sarr’s situation is also uncertain amid speculation over his future, while Mohammed Kudus could be included among the substitutes after spending more than seven months out with a thigh problem.

New signing Omar Marmoush could make his Tottenham debut following his transfer from Manchester City. Savio is another player pushing for a starting berth after his impressive contribution against Charlton.

Sandro Tonali, who arrived for a club-record £100m fee (approximately Ksh17.4 billion) earlier in the summer, is expected to feature against his former club. He could line up alongside Mateus Fernandes and Conor Gallagher in midfield.

Captain Micky van de Ven and Pedro Porro both came off the bench in midweek and could return to the starting XI. Van de Ven could partner Jan Paul van Hecke in central defence, while Porro may replace Archie Gray at right-back.
