Julie Gichuru returns to Nation Media Group 18 years after her exit

Veteran journalist and media personality Julie Gichuru is returning to Nation Media Group (NMG) 18 years after leaving the media company, this time as a member of its board.

Gichuru is among six new directors appointed to the NMG board as the company undergoes changes in its leadership.

The appointments were announced by NMG on Friday, August 28, 2026, with Gichuru joining Juliana Rotich, Bharat Thakrar, Julius Kipng’etich, Georgia Mutagahywa and Wilfred Musau.

Gichuru previously worked at NTV, the television arm of Nation Media Group, where she was among the station’s early journalists when it began broadcasting in 2005.

She worked as a news anchor, current affairs editor and talk-show host before leaving the station in 2008 to join Citizen TV.

Her return marks a new chapter in her relationship with the media house, this time bringing her experience in journalism, media and corporate leadership to the board.

She has remained a prominent figure in Kenya’s media and leadership circles since leaving NMG, later taking on roles in media production, communications and leadership.

Gichuru currently serves as Chief Executive of the Africa Leadership and Dialogue Institute.

Six join board

NMG said the six new directors bring experience in media, communications, technology, digital transformation, financial services, corporate leadership, governance, marketing and stakeholder engagement.

Technology entrepreneur Juliana Rotich, former Scangroup CEO Bharat Thakrar and Jubilee Insurance Group CEO Julius Kipng’etich are among those joining Gichuru on the board.

The new directors also include Georgia Mutagahywa, Chief of Staff to the Chairman of Taifa Group of Companies, and former National Bank of Kenya Managing Director Wilfred Musau.

The appointments took effect on Friday, August 28, 2026.

Four exit NMG

The changes will also see four directors leave the NMG board.

They are Al-Noor Ramji, Sultan Ali Akbar Allana, Fayyaz Nurmohamed and Prof Nancy Booker.

NMG thanked the four directors for their service and contribution to the company.

“As they conclude their tenure as Directors on the Board of Nation Media Group, we extend our appreciation to Al-Noor Ramji, Sultan Ali Akbar Allana, Fayyaz Nurmohamed, and Prof. Nancy Booker for their dedicated service and contribution to NMG,” the company said in a statement shared on X.

Gichuru’s return comes at a significant point for NMG, following a transaction in which Taarifa Ltd, a company owned by Tanzanian businessman Rostam Aziz, acquired the Aga Khan Fund for Economic Development’s 54.08 per cent stake in the media company.
