A G3 rifle loaded with 18 rounds of ammunition was recovered on Friday, July 25, in a significant breakthrough by officers from the Maili Saba Police Station in Trans Nzoia County.

The recovery marks a critical step in ongoing efforts by the National Police Service (NPS) to curb the proliferation of illegal firearms across the country.

“In response, officers led by the Officer Commanding Station (OCS) swiftly proceeded to the scene, where they conducted an extensive search that led to the recovery of a G3 rifle loaded with 18 rounds of ammunition,” read an NPS post dated July 26, 2025.

According to a statement from the NPS, the operation was launched after police received a report from an employer who suspected that one of their employees was in possession of an unlicensed firearm.

Acting swiftly, a team led by the Officer Commanding Station (OCS) conducted an intensive search at the suspect’s residence.

“Yesterday, police officers at Maili Saba Police Station received a report from an employer who suspected that one of their employees was in possession of an illegal firearm,” read the post.

The rifle was discovered concealed between two unmounted flat doors inside an unused hen coop. Alongside the firearm were 18 live rounds, raising concerns about the potential threat posed if the weapon had remained undetected.

Person of interest at large

The person of interest, identified as an employee at the premises, managed to flee before police could apprehend him. “Officers are currently in pursuit of the suspect, an employee at the premises, who fled the scene,” read the police statement.

Police are calling on members of the public to provide any information that may lead to the suspect’s arrest. The NPS has emphasised its dedication to protecting communities and preventing illegal arms from fuelling violence.

The recovery comes amid broader national efforts to combat illegal firearms circulating in Kenya. While law enforcement agencies have increased operations and intelligence-led crackdowns.

“The National Police Service remains committed to ensuring that illegal firearms do not fall into the wrong hands,” the NPS reaffirmed in its statement.

As the investigation continues, the Maili Saba rifle recovery underscores the importance of community vigilance and rapid police response in preventing crime and promoting public safety.
