In a bold crackdown against illicit trade, the police destroyed large quantities of illegal brews and narcotics at Nyamira Police Station, Nyamira South Sub-County.

In a statement on its official X account on Friday, August 22, 2025, the police said the exercise was part of a sustained national effort to eliminate illegal substances that continue to harm communities across the country.

“This event marks our continued commitment to safeguarding our communities from the dangers of illegal substances,” the statement read.

The exhibits, which were linked to concluded criminal cases, included a staggering 348 litres of chang’aa, 130 litres of kangara, 2 kilograms of cannabis sativa, expired alcoholic drinks, and several steel drums used in the production and storage of the brews.

Police say the operation sends a clear message to those still engaging in illegal brewing and drug trade.

“We will not relent in the fight against illicit brews and narcotics. These substances are destroying lives and tearing families apart,” the authorities said.

According to the NPS, such operations are part of ongoing efforts to clean up communities and promote public health and safety.

“We’re working closely with local administrators to ensure a safer and healthier society,” the statement read.

The operation was led by Sub-County Police Commander Martin Wambugu; the destruction was part of a coordinated effort involving top security officials, including Sub-County Administration Police Commander Bernard Wetete, DCIO Emily Njeri, and OCS Charles Ouma Kisiengo. The Assistant County Commissioner, Biegon Wilberforce, was also present to oversee the operation.

The NPS has urged members of the public to continue supporting the crackdown by reporting suspicious activities, warning that the war against drugs and illicit alcohol is far from over.

Spearheading the crackdown

Meanwhile, the government has established a special police unit to spearhead the nationwide crackdown on illicit alcohol, narcotics, and adulterated ethanol.

The move comes amid growing concerns over the devastating impact of illegal brews and drug abuse in various parts of the country.

Speaking on Thursday, August 21, 2025, during the Jukwa la Usalama Nyeri edition, the Interior and National Administration Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen announced the formation of a national multi-agency team tasked with conducting coordinated sting operations, targeting manufacturers, distributors, and sellers of illicit substances across all counties.

“We have agreed at the security meeting with the IG and the CEO of NACADA that we are going to establish a special multi-agency team that will include KEBS and KRA, among other agencies, to work together to ensure compliance,” Murkomen revealed.

The CS vowed to ensure continuous crackdowns until the vice is decimated, not only in Central but also in other parts of the country where the establishments are operating with illegal licences or none.

He said the Multi-Agency Team will be coordinated from Nairobi, where the regional and county governments need support.

“Where we feel the need to reinforce, the national team will be called in to support this issue of alcohol in our country.”
