Police arrest two, seize 222 bhang rolls in Busia

Two individuals have been arrested and 222 rolls of bhang seized in a drug bust carried out by police officers in Malaba Town, Busia County.
According to a statement from the National Police Service (NPS), posted on their X account on Friday, July 25, 2025, the operation was carried out by officers from Malaba Police Station, Teso North Sub-County, as part of an ongoing crackdown on narcotic drugs in the area.
“National Police Service officers from Malaba Police Station, Teso North Sub-County, Busia County, today, 25th July 2025, conducted a successful crackdown on narcotic drugs in Malaba Town, arresting two notorious individuals,” the NPS statement reads.
Arrest details
According to the Police, one of the arrested individuals was found in possession of 201 rolls of bhang and two packets of brown Rizla papers commonly used for rolling drugs.
“One suspect was found in possession of 201 rolls of bhang, dried green plant suspected to be Cannabis sativa, weighing 500 grams, and two packets of brown Rizla papers,” the statement reads.

The second individual was arrested with 21 rolls of bhang, bringing the total seizure to 222 rolls during the Friday operation.
The NPS commended members of the public for their cooperation, stating that the successful operation was made possible through actionable intelligence provided by local residents.
“The National Police Service commends members of the public for providing crucial intelligence that led to the arrests,” the statement added.
NPS further stated that both individuals are currently being held at Malaba Police Station pending their arraignment in court.

Similar operation
This drug bust follows a similar operation that took place on Monday, July 21, 2025, which resulted in the arrest of one individual and the seizure of 200 kg of cannabis along Jogoo Road.
According to another statement posted on X, that operation was part of a broader campaign to eliminate dangerous drugs and unlicensed alcoholic brews from Nairobi.
“On 21 July 2025, officers from the Nairobi Regional Operations Team conducted a targeted operation in Jogoo Road as part of an ongoing crackdown on narcotics and illicit substances,” the statement noted.
“During the raid, the officers arrested one suspect and confiscated 200 kg of cannabis (bhang) and 100 litres of chang’aa, which were secured as evidence. The suspect was placed in custody pending arraignment,” the statement added.
