Police seize 200kg of bhang, 100 litres of chang’aa in Nairobi

A major crackdown on illegal narcotics and brews in Nairobi bore significant results on Monday, July 21, 2025, after police seized a large haul of cannabis and chang’aa during an operation along Jogoo Road.
Officers from the Nairobi Regional Operations Team confiscated 200 kilograms of cannabis (commonly known as bhang) and 100 litres of chang’aa in a targeted raid aimed at disrupting the supply of illicit substances in the capital.
One person of interest was arrested during the sting operation and is currently in police custody pending arraignment in court. The seized items were secured as evidence and will be used to support the prosecution.
Dangerous drug eradication
According to a statement from the National Police Service, the operation is part of a broader and ongoing campaign to rid Nairobi of dangerous drugs and unlicensed alcoholic brews.
“On 21 July 2025, officers from the Nairobi Regional Operations Team conducted a targeted operation in Jogoo Road as part of an ongoing crackdown on narcotics and illicit substances,” the statement read in part.
“During the raid, the officers arrested one suspect and confiscated 200 kg of cannabis (bhang) and 100 litres of chang’aa, which were secured as evidence. The suspect was placed in custody pending arraignment. The National Police Service reaffirms its commitment to combating illicit drugs and brews, as well as protecting communities through sustained enforcement and proactive policing.”

The police have urged members of the public to continue reporting suspicious activity and collaborating with law enforcement to create safer neighbourhoods.
Kitui bust
This comes after police in Kitui arrested a person of interest and recovered 40 rolls of bhang during an operation conducted on Saturday, July 19, 2025.
According to X’s account statement on Sunday, July 20, 2025, police said, acting on a tip-off from members of the public, police officers on patrol arrested a suspect in the Kunda Kindu area of Kitui Central.
“The suspect was found in possession of 40 rolls of cannabis sativa and is currently in police custody. He is expected to be charged in court on Monday, 21 July 2025,” the statement read.
“The National Police Service remains steadfast in its fight against the trafficking, possession, and abuse of narcotics and other illicit substances.”
