Police in Murang’a are holding in custody a 24-year-old woman who is believed to have drowned her two children in the Mathioya River on Wednesday, October 22, 2025, in the evening.

According to the sources, word started spreading around that the lady identified as Lilian Wacera had thrown her children in the river, and the residents alerted the area chief.

At the time of the arrest, the woman led the police officers and the members of the public to the river where she threw the children.

The search for the two children, aged 1.8 and seven years, began, but only one body was retrieved by 9:00 pm about 300 metres from their home.

The search was called off and resumed on the morning of Thursday, October 23, 2025, when the second body was retrieved at noon.

Thomas Kimotho, a family member, said the suspect had left her matrimonial home in Samburu, where she was staying with her husband, while insisting she was coming home to see her ailing dad.

Kimotho added that the husband facilitated their transport home; little did he know that the wife had a different agenda.

“The man called her father, who told him he was okay and not ailing, as the wife had told her. He requested her to go back home, but instead she went to kill the children,” Kimotho said.

Arrest

Confirming the incident, Murang’a County Police Commander Kimaiyo Kemboi said the mother was arrested on Wednesday, October 23, 2025, evening as the search for the children continued.

Kimaiyo said, according to the preliminary investigations, the woman seemed to be mentally unstable, which could have led her to murder the children by drowning.

He, however, said the investigation into the matter is underway to establish the circumstances that led the mother to drown the two.

“The mother is in our custody, and we shall be interrogating her to get information on what transpired,” Kimaiyo said.

“She will be arraigned in court facing murder charges even as the investigation continues,” he added.

The incident comes barely a month after another woman stabbed two of her children to death and another escaped death by a whisker.

The woman also tried to kill herself before surrendering to the police. It’s alleged that she suspected her husband of having an affair with another woman.
