Police in Nyeri have launched a manhunt for a 40-year-old man who is believed to have murdered his wife, Margaret Nyawira, on Friday night and locked her body, along with their three children, inside their one-room rented house in Ngangarithi Estate, on the outskirts of Nyeri town.

According to Lawrence Kamuri, the person of interest’s brother, Joseph Kariuki (the accused), called him on Friday morning and urged him to visit his house with police officers, confessing that he had committed a heinous act.

Kamuri said that upon arrival, he found the children awake. When he asked them about their mother’s whereabouts, they told him she was still asleep.

“When I went to the place where my brother was staying, I heard the children playing. When I opened the door, I asked them where their mother was, and they told me she was still sleeping,” Kamuri said.

He added that he tried to wake her up, but she was unresponsive, at which point they informed the police.

Kamuri further revealed that his brother had recently exhibited strange behaviour and that he had even questioned his mental stability.

“Sometimes I used to question his behaviour, because there were instances when we walked together and he would accuse his wife of speaking to or being admired by strangers,” he added.

Martin Ndung’u, the deceased’s uncle, confirmed that the couple often had domestic disputes, which had been reported to authorities on several occasions.

Family members are now urging police to intensify the search for the person of interest, who they believe poses a danger to his family. He was last seen in Mukurwe-ini Constituency, at their home village of Muthuthi-ini, where he hails from.
