Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has confirmed the surge of organised goon activities in Trans Nzoia County.

Appearing before the National Assembly Committee on Administration and Internal Security on Tuesday, April 22, 2025, Murkomen disclosed that most of the goons in the county are attached to political leaders.

While acknowledging the insecurity issue, the Interior CS dismissed claims that goons had morphed into gangs.

“I don’t think Trans Nzoia really has gangs, but they have goons. At the moment, there are many goons attached to politicians in Trans Nzoia. They have not matured to be a gang, but there are goons attached to leaders, and we know those goons are running around political actors,” Murkomen told the committee.

Intervention

With the goons posing a danger to locals, CS Murkomen detailed that appropriate action had been taken to dismantle them. He told the members of parliament that his ministry was collaborating with the county security team to arrest the situation.

He painted a grim picture, indicating that some people were being compelled to seek escorts while moving around Kitale town.

“A lot has been done so far to dismantle those goons, but still, a lot has to be done because some people are hired per session.

“There were times you would go to Kitale and walk on the streets normally, but now if you go to Kitale and you are walking around, you have to get some people to escort you because there are many goons who can make your life very difficult,” Murkomen stated.

“We are working very hard with the county security team in Trans Nzoia, and I will be visiting there as part of our county visits, but a lot has been done to deal with these issues,” he asserted.

According to the CS, the government would not hesitate to clamp down on political leaders associated with the goons in that county. However, Murkomen did not mention politicians linked with the goons in Trans Nzoia County.
