Murkomen breaks silence over Narok deadly clashes

Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen on Monday night, April 28, 2025, condemned the deadly clashes in Angara Barrikoi, Narok County, over a disputed piece of land.
Speaking at Wilson Airport after landing from a daylong engagement in the North Rift, Murkomen noted that no life deserved to be lost in the clashes.
He insisted that land issues could be resolved peacefully.
“This is a very sad occurrence for us in the national security team because we must make sure that lives are protected. Land issues can easily be resolved peacefully; it should not lead to any loss of life,” Murkomen stated.

The incident happened after residents, claiming historical ownership of the land, blocked the main road to prevent land officials from surveying the area.
The protest quickly escalated into violent clashes with police officers, leading to injuries on both sides.
Those killed
According to Murkomen, preliminary reports indicated that five people had been killed. However, the CS maintained that he could not authoritatively confirm the numbers, revealing that calm had not been restored in Angara Barrikoi.
Further, he disclosed that one police officer was critically injured after an arrow was lodged into his head. Murkomen said that the officer was not immediately evacuated due to the tense security situation in the area.

“It is projected that five people have died, the reason we cannot confirm the number now is that calm has not been fully restored in the area to enable security officers to establish the real facts,” Murkomen stated.
“From the information we have is that five civilians have lost their lives and five police officers are injured, one of whom is critically injured because he has an arrow lodged in his head, and it has taken a long time to evacuate that police officer to a hospital because of the situation around there,” he added.
Investigations
Murkomen, who was addressing journalists at Wilson Airport explained that investigations are yet to be launched due to the volatile situation in the area.
Nonetheless, he confirmed a probe will be launched to establish what transpired and whether police officers were warranted to use excessive force.
“The investigations are yet done or complete because we need to establish the circumstances under which the five civilians died, what was the circumstance that the police officers engaged the civilians and whether the situation warranted that kind of force.”
“Investigations will also establish the persons who perpetrated these acts against the police officers. We will also deal with every person involved in inciting violence and prompting the use of force,” Murkomen asserted.
To enable investigations to commence, Murkomen pleaded with the community to maintain order and remain peaceful while confirming a heavy police deployment in the area.
