Faith Jebitok from Chemase in Tinderet Constituency in Nandi is a woman of immense pain after her hand was severed by a man whom she had leased land from to plant sugar cane, only to end in a conflict during harvesting.

The 26-year-old woman who is recuperating at Kapsabet county referral hospital is in pain to narrate her few-day ordeal

“He had leased me a portion of a farm in Chemase where I had planted sugar cane. Without my awareness, the same man whom I paid money to get the said farm had already harvested my canes and sold. When I realised this, I went directly to the farm and found the ugly scenes. When I asked him why he did such, he became angry, abused me and later picked up a panga and chopped off my left hand,” Jebitok narrated while tears rolled down her cheeks

Jebitok, who has been working as a restaurant attendant in Nandi, says she was the sole breadwinner for her family, and with one hand chopped, it will be difficult to provide for her other siblings.

“Why such to me surely? What mistake did I make to deserve such? Who will now provide for my family without another hand! May justice prevail over me. I plead, “Jebitok insisted.

Out of danger

Kapsabet County Referral Medical Superintendent Dr Richard Chepkwony has revealed that Jebitok is out of danger after she underwent surgery.

However, according to the doctor, Jebitok will need to get an artificial hand.

“We attended to her immediately after she was admitted. She may need a prosthesis, which in this case is an artificial hand,” Chepkwony remarked

He said they will link up the patient with the Association For The Physically Disabled of Kenya (APDK) for further help

Investigations launched

Meanwhile, police in Tinderet sub-county are investigating the matter, as a section of residents have really condemned the incident, terming it gender based violence.

Edwin Tallam, Nandi East elder, wants the authorities to take tough action against the man.

“This violence against women. How can you attack someone on her own rights? This is an act of brutality and should not be tolerated at all. We are demanding immediate justice for Faith from the authorities. This is very wrong, ” Tallam stated.
