Elgeyo Marakwet residents voluntarily surrender AK-47 rifles

The residents of Murukutwa, Chechan, Chemwonyo, and Talai Villages in Kolowa in Elgeyo Marakwet County have voluntarily handed over at least seven illegal firearms to the police.

In a statement by the National Police Service (NPS) on Monday, September 22, 2025, the seven AK-47 rifles were voluntarily surrendered by the members of the community in a bid to curb armed conflicts in the region.

The police have further revealed that the rifles were surrendered on Sunday, 21st September 2025, and received by the sub-county security team with the support of local peace committees.

“Police in Tot, within Elgeyo Marakwet County, have received seven AK-47 rifles that were voluntarily surrendered by members of the community on Sunday, 21st September 2025,” police said.

Police have also confirmed that the firearms have been secured in safe custody at Tot Police Station.

“The firearms were handed over to the sub-county security team with the support of local peace committees in Murukutwa, Chechan, Chemwonyo, and Talai Locations. The surrendered rifles have been secured in safe custody at Tot Police Station,” police noted.

The National Police Service has described the move as a positive step that demonstrates the growing community commitment to peace, security, and voluntary disarmament, which remains central to curbing armed conflict and promoting peaceful coexistence in the Kerio Valley region.

Police further noted that such gestures help strengthen peace and security while preventing the misuse of weapons in armed conflict and crime.

“The National Police Service commends the cooperation of the public and the peace committees and calls for sustained support in fostering peace through information sharing and the voluntary surrender of illegal firearms,” Police said.

Tamkal resident surrenders riffle

The Tot case came just a day after a resident of Tamkal Village in Kolowa Sub-County, Baringo County, had voluntarily handed over an illegal firearm to the police.

In a statement by the National Police Service (NPS) on Sunday, September 21, 2025, the AK-47 rifle, which was surrendered with a magazine and two rounds of ammunition, was received by the Sub-County security team in the presence of members of the local Peace Committee. It has since been placed in secure custody at Kolowa Police Station.
