4K litres of Kangara seized in Highrise during police raid

Police in Nairobi have seized more than 4,000 litres of Kangara during a targeted operation at an illegal brewing site in the Highrise area.
In a statement shared by the National Police Service (NPS) on Thursday, November 20, 2025, the raid was conducted by officers from Lang’ata Police Station after receiving intelligence reports about ongoing illicit production in the neighbourhood.
The team, led by the Station Commander, found large quantities of Kangara, 10 litres of Chang’aa and a full set of brewing equipment hidden within the premises.
According to the NPS, the operation was part of ongoing efforts to curb the manufacture and sale of illegal alcohol, which continues to pose serious health and safety risks to the public.
Investigators are now pursuing crucial leads to track down an individual who fled during the operation. Police say the person of interest will be taken to court once traced.
“Yesterday, a team of police officers from Lang’ata Police Station, led by the Station Commander, conducted a targeted operation on an illegal brewing site in the Highrise area. The team seized 10 litres of Chang’aa, 4,000 litres of Kangara, and brewing apparatus. Police are following crucial leads to arrest a suspect who escaped,” the statement read in part.

The National Police Service has reiterated its commitment to intensifying crackdowns on such activities, noting that illegal brews remain a major threat to communities.
“The individual will be promptly arraigned in court upon arrest. The National Police Service remains committed to eradicating illegal brewing and ensuring public safety and security,” the authorities added.
Separate operation
This comes a day after police in Kisii Central Sub-County seized 2,000 litres of Kangara and 40 litres of Chang’aa during an operation in Kiogoro Location.
In a statement issued by the NPS on Wednesday night, November 19, 2025, officers from Kiogoro Police Station raided a suspected Chang’aa den in Riangombenene Village after receiving intelligence. They found a woman producing the brew and recovered 2,000 litres of Kangara and 40 litres of Chang’aa.
“Police in Kisii Central Sub-County have intensified their campaign against the production and sale of illicit alcohol, following a successful raid in Kiogoro Location. In a coordinated operation led by officers from Kiogoro Police Station, authorities targeted individuals involved in the illegal manufacture of Chang’aa in Riangombenene Village. The raid resulted in the recovery of 2,000 litres of Kangara and 40 litres of Chang’aa,” the statement read in part.
The individual was arrested on the spot and taken to Kiogoro Police Station. Police say the seized brew has been secured as evidence as she awaits processing and arraignment.
“One female was arrested and escorted to Kiogoro Police Station, where the confiscated items were secured as evidence. She will be processed and arraigned in court to face charges,” NPS stated.
