Two people are feared dead after chaos erupted at Kasarani Stadium during the viewing of the body of the late former Prime Minister Raila Odinga on Thursday, October 16, 2025.

The incident happened when police opened fire while dispersing crowds that had gathered inside and outside the stadium. Witnesses at the scene said that police used tear gas to control the crowd that was trying to force its way into the stadium.

Local witnesses confirmed to People Daily Digital that two people were shot dead during the confrontation, while several others sustained injuries, but the media outlet said it was yet to confirm authenticity. The situation had been tense throughout the day as delays pushed the programme behind schedule. The public viewing of Raila Odinga’s body had initially been scheduled to take place at Parliament Buildings, but organisers later moved it to Kasarani Stadium due to space and logistical concerns.

By the time the procession finally arrived, thousands had already filled the venue, leading to the chaotic scenes that ended in tragedy.

As of the publishing of this article, official confirmation from police regarding the deaths was still pending. Authorities have not yet released a statement on the incident or the exact number of casualties.

The day’s events cast a sombre mood over what was meant to be a peaceful national farewell for Raila Odinga, a leader remembered for his decades of political struggle and influence in Kenya’s history.
