Celebrated musician Willy Paul recently opened up about his transition into secular music, revealing that the decision to backslide was not entirely his own, but was partly influenced by various external factors.
In an interview, he shared that his producer, Teddy B, exerted pressure on him due to a debt he owed. The hitmaker marked his initial backslide into the secular music scene, and it served as his first public announcement of his shift from the gospel scene.
According to Willy Paul, he owed Teddy B a large sum of money and Teddy B coerced him to release his hit ‘Lamba Nyonyo’. He felt compelled to venture into this genre due to the circumstances surrounding his debt with Teddy B.
“My transition from gospel was smooth and so far so good, Hiyo song, ilikuwa deni ya Teddy B. Nilikuwa na deni yake kubwa, nligongesha gari yake na sikuwa na pesa ya kulipa. Akaniambia wewe fanya hivi, imba ngoma inakaa hivi, Yeye ata ndiye aliandika hiyo song na nilikuwa nashilikilia machozi kabla niimbe,” Willy Paul stated.
All God’s plan
Asked about whether it was a calling from his childhood to join the gospel industry, Willy Paul said that all that has happened was part of God’s plan and he gives thanks either way.
“Everything happens the way God plans it and if he wanted me to start from the church, then so be it, I give thanks. I had been banned from the public by officials because they said I was singing secular. But you see, I was young and praising God in the best way I knew how something similar to what is currently Genge tone,” Willy Paul added.
Even before he exited from the gospel scene, Willy Paul highlighted that he was going through a rough time and neither the church nor people within the industry came to his aid.
“There was a time I was too low and asked help from people, they all sounded busy and at the same time, I had been blacklisted. It was then that life took a toll for the worst and the shows that would be available were those that required me to minister. And when you check the crowd that attended, the audience came in big numbers,” Willy Paul added.
Serving God
The musician shed light on his relationship with God and confirmed that the only thing that changed was the type of music he now engages in, but he still has a way to serve God throughout his life.
