Actress and radio host Jacquey Nyaminde, popularly known by her stage name Wilbroda, has criticised the Kenya police recruitment exercise, calling it “backwards and barbaric.”

Speaking about the process on the radio on Tuesday, November 18, 2025, she said, “I feel like the police recruitment exercise is so backwards; it is so barbaric. Qualifications za wewe kupatiwa ndio uwe polisi ni vitu ambazo hata mimi sielewi.”

She questioned the fairness and logic behind some of the requirements and expressed concern over how the process is carried out.

She compared the exercise to recruitment systems in other countries, saying it seems more like a performance than a serious selection process. “I would like to see katika hizi nchi zingine, how do they do a police recruitment exercise? Je, ufungue mdomo, ufinye macho, utolewe shati, ukimbie, upanue mguu, yaani inakaanga kama watu wanafanyiwa mzaha you know. It looks like it is such a joke. I am sorry to say,” he said.

Wilbroda also shared a specific example of a candidate whom he feels was unfairly disqualified. “Niko hapa nasoma story ya Idris Kiprop. Alienda for the exercise akaenda upande za Baringo central. Na katika zile tests tofauti wanafanya, Idris akawa disqualified because height yake haikua imefika, ni mfupi. Na hata si eti ni mfupi really. Ni tu vile height yake haifiki kwa the qualification height,” she pointed out that he has seen shorter police officers in service and questioned why height should automatically disqualify someone.

Questions over recruitment standards

Wilbroda argued that height should not be a strict requirement because not all police officers handle firearms.

“But I have seen short police men. I have seen short, round policemen every other day. How did they get into the service? What the hell? Pale katika police si wote wanaenda kutumia bunduki. I mean, height is not a requirement. Si polisi wote wanashika bunduki, we have other special units,” he said.

She added that some of the physical tests seemed unnecessary and unrelated to the duties of many officers. “Why am I going for training? Kukosa kufunga macho moja ni kitu ya ku disqualify mtu? Height?” Wilbroda said, highlighting what she perceives as inconsistencies and outdated standards in the recruitment process.
