Smart Joker celebrates academic milestone with Broadcast Journalism diploma
Kenyan comedian and social media sensation Michael Akala Omuka, also known as Smart Joker, has marked a significant academic achievement after officially graduating with a Diploma in Broadcast Journalism from the Kenya Institute of Mass Communication (KIMC).
In an emotional post shared via his official Facebook account on Wednesday, November 26, 2025, Smart Joker described the journey as challenging, especially balancing parenthood and studies.
“Studying as a parent is never a walk in the park. It’s a long road—years, months, weeks, days. Yet today, in just a few hours, the journey was crowned: I have been officially announced as a Broadcast Journalism Scholar, Diploma Level, from the Kenya Institute of Mass Communication (KIMC),” he stated.

Smart Joker’s gratitude
The comedian expressed gratitude to his family, mentors, and coaches who supported him throughout the rigorous programme.
“My mother stood there. My sisters and brothers stood there. And my Shotokan Karate coach from Stonebridge Karate Club—steady as ever—stood there. Their presence felt like a legacy embracing the future. It was sweet. It was inspiring. It was a reminder that greatness is a team sport,” he added.
Smart Joker also thanked God for carrying him through the journey and acknowledged the role of his mentors in refining his craft and elevating his academic and professional profile.
This achievement marks a new chapter for the popular entertainer, who is now equipped with formal training in broadcast journalism alongside his thriving comedy career.
“My mother stood there. My sisters and brothers stood there. And my Shotokan Karate coach from Stonebridge Karate Club—steady as ever—stood there. Smart Joker’s journalism career
However, this is not Smart Joker’s first academic certificate. In 2017, the comedian earned himself a certificate in broadcast journalism from the same institution.
He joined the premier media institution in 2016 as he juggled between his comedy career at the then Churchill show and education.
He later established a successful career as a radio presenter before going back to KIMC to upgrade and earn himself a diploma.
