Sauti Sol’s Savara meets King Charles III
Kenyan boy band Sauti Sol’s Savara had the opportunity to meet King Charles III during the monarch’s recent four-day visit to Kenya.
In a post on his Instagram page, Savara revealed that they engaged in a conversation about their shared love for music.
“I met King Charles. We spoke about playing instruments. Me drums and base, him the chelo,” he wrote.
However, the ‘Balance’ hitmaker with a sombre tone expressed his dissatisfaction with the King’s talk about the historical context of British colonialism in Kenya.
According to Savara acknowledging the atrocities committed by the British against Kenyans was not enough without an apology or any talk of reparations.
“The King’s visit to Kenya has been interesting, he spoke about the atrocities committed by the British to Kenyans during colonialism and termed it as inexcusable…But there was no apology; and no talk of reparations,” he wrote.
King Charles III says no excuse for Kenya’s colonial violence
Amid his state visit to Kenya, the King acknowledged the historical injustices stemming from Britain’s colonial past, expressing deep remorse and acknowledging the absence of justification for the actions taken.
Despite this, he refrained from issuing a formal apology, indicating that such a decision rested with governmental authorities.
President William Ruto commended the King for confronting the uncomfortable realities of the colonial era, acknowledging the brutality and atrocities faced by African communities.
President Ruto emphasized that considerable efforts are still necessary to achieve comprehensive reparations for the impact of colonial rule.
