International journalist Larry Madowo was taken aback after YouTuber Wode Maya showed him the Ghanaians’ way of eating roasted corn popularly called by Kenyans as ‘mahindi choma’

In a fascinating cultural exchange, Madowo was introduced to the Ghanaian tradition of savouring roasted corn by dipping it in salted water and eating it together with coconut.

In a photo on his X media featuring Wode Maya, the journalist appeared visibly amazed by the snack they enjoyed in what seemed to be the streets of Accra, Ghana.

“Ghanaians soak their roasted corn in salted water and eat it with coconut and it changed my life! I’ve been sleeping on this marvel until @wode_maya,” Madowo exclaimed.

Wode Maya, known for showcasing the richness of African cultures on his YouTube channel, also captured the moment in a video as they made jokes.

The CNN journalist revealed his intentions to adopt the culture and show his people back in East Africa.

“I will export this to East Africa,” Madowo said in the video.

Madowo eats boiled snails, mice

In December 2023, Larry Madowo left tongue wagging after sharing videos of himself enjoying boiled snails on a bustling street in Morocco.

The CNN Africa correspondent was captured deftly using a toothpick to savour the tender snail meat, expressing his satisfaction with the experience.

Encouraging others to broaden their culinary horizons, he highlighted the delicacy of snails in various parts of Africa.

“I ate snails 🐌 in Morocco. They were tastier than I expected!” Larry Madowo captioned a video of himself eating the snail.

“There’s nothing I won’t eat. Would you try some boiled snails? 🐌 Snails are a delicacy in many parts of Africa. Don’t sleep on them,” Madowo wrote.

Larry Madowo added that he had no qualms whatsoever about eating taboo foods while replying to netizens who raised concerns about eating snails.

This viral video emerged five years after another culinary escapade by Madowo, where he surprised many by indulging in roasted mice during a visit to Malawi.

In 2019, he shared his delight in the taste of the rodent, comparing it to chicken and emphasizing its significance among the Chewa community in central Malawi.

“I ate a mouse 🐁 for the first time and it was, well, amazing! Mice (not rats!) are a delicacy among the Chewa of central Malawi. I will eat anything and I had to try these. They’re eaten whole with the skin and everything. Tastes just like chicken 😉,” Madowo wrote.
