Smooth jazz legend Kenny G lit up Nairobi on Saturday night, September 27, 2025, with a memorable concert at the Kenyatta International Convention Centre (KICC).

The event, dubbed Kenny G One Night Only, attracted music lovers from across Kenya and neighbouring countries.

The celebrated saxophonist had promised fans a special evening, and he delivered. From the moment he stepped on stage, the atmosphere was electric. His crisp sound and signature saxophone style filled the hall, drawing cheers and applause from the audience.

However, what stood out for many fans was not only the music but also Kenny G’s attempt at Kiswahili. Before the concert, he had hinted that he wanted to prepare a short speech in the local language. He joked that he needed a pen and paper, saying fans could help him write it down and show him how to say it properly.

On stage, he tried out his new phrases to the delight of the crowd.

Nimefurahi, ni mara yangu ya kwanza Kanairo. Jibambe na ngoma yangu,” he said, smiling.

Translated, the words meant, “I am happy, it is my first time in Nairobi. Enjoy my music.”

His Swahili was simple and broken, but fans loved the effort. The auditorium erupted in cheers, showing appreciation for his willingness to connect with them in their language.

The concert itself was nothing short of spectacular. The night also reminded fans of the timeless hits that defined Kenny G’s career, such as Songbird and Forever in Love, which have made him a household name worldwide. Every note was clear and precise. His band matched his energy, blending perfectly with his smooth melodies to create an experience that felt both intimate and grand.

The audience included celebrities, top executives, dignitaries, and everyday jazz lovers. The KICC amphitheatre provided the perfect setting, with its modern sound systems, wide seating, and rooftop views of Nairobi’s skyline. The city lights outside added to the magic inside, making the night unforgettable.

Local talent sets tone

Kenya’s own Kato Change and Coster Ojwang, popularly known as The Fisherman, added a local flavour to the evening. Their presence highlighted the depth of homegrown jazz and instrumental talent that continues to thrive alongside global icons.

For Kato, the night became even more personal. After his set, he was surprised on stage by his mother, sparking an emotional reunion after a long time apart. The touching moment, witnessed by a cheering audience, added warmth and intimacy to an already unforgettable night.
