Comedian and activist Eric Omondi has said that despite being in the comedy industry for 17 years, he still considers himself an upcoming comedian.

Speaking during an interview with YouTuber Trudy Kitui on Monday, September 22, 2025, the self-proclaimed president of comedy in Africa explained that humility, consistency and persistence are the guiding principles that have kept his career fresh and relevant over the years.

“In some way, I believe I am a King. Regarding my brand, having come a long way, I would say it is God and consistency. Secondly, never feel as if you have made it, as if you have arrived,” he said.

Omondi said his brand has come a long way, crediting his growth to God and a relentless drive to stay consistent.

He explained that his secret lies in never feeling as though he has reached the peak of success. Instead, he chooses to carry the mindset of someone still climbing, which he described as the trick that sustains his creativity and longevity.

“I consider myself still upcoming. I even tell Churchill, when I see him as a father figure, that I am upcoming.”

He revealed that even Churchill, whom he regards as a father figure in comedy, once questioned why he still referred to himself as upcoming after so many years on stage.

Omondi said his response was that the tag was not a denial of success but a conscious choice to remain grounded, hungry and open to growth.

“And Churchill would ask me why I still say I am upcoming after 17 years in comedy, but that is the trick.”

The comedian urged artistes across different fields, whether in music, football or comedy, never to see themselves as having fully arrived.

According to him, adopting the mindset of an upcoming performer ensures that one stays current, adaptable and resilient in a constantly evolving entertainment industry.

“Whether you are a musician, comedian, footballer, or anything else, never think you have arrived. Always be fresh, be current, be consistent, persistent, and most importantly, maintain the upcoming status,” Eric added.

Omondi warned that the pursuit of being called a star can blind artistes and stunt their growth.

He insisted that success should not lead to complacency, arguing that every artiste must embrace the discipline of starting afresh each day.

“Always be fresh, be current, be consistent, persistent, and most importantly, maintain the upcoming status. Never desire to be a star,” he shared.
