Kenyan entertainer DJ Xclusive has weighed into the never-ending debate about relationships and the culture of “kutuma fare,” a trend where some women expect men to send them money for transport before meeting.

According to him, love and companionship should not be reduced to transactions. Speaking on social media on Monday, September 8, 2025, DJ Xclusive argued that the current generation is making dating unnecessarily transactional.

“This discussion ya mambo ya kutuma fare. We need to stop making relationship transactions. If you are a lady and I am asking you to come and see me, I am hoping pia wewe unataka kuniona,” he said.

Effort, not just money

DJ Xclusive pointed out that men also put in effort when inviting women over, whether by cooking a meal or buying food. He questioned why such effort is often overlooked in comparison to financial expectations.

“Maybe he has cooked something, maybe he will order takeout… isn’t he putting in some work for you?” he posed.

He expressed concern that some young women today have turned dating into what feels like a paid service, attaching price tags to visits or interactions.

“I have seen this younger generation of young ladies ambao wanasema, if a man would, he will… men used to go to war. Hii si war. Hio yako ni… Hii yako weka tu bei yako… kukuvist ni hii amount… kukuona ni this amount… hiyo transaction,” he added.

Relationships should be mutual

For DJ Xclusive, relationships are a two-way street that requires both parties to contribute, rather than one side always footing the bill. He emphasised that treating dating as a financial arrangement undermines genuine connection.

“By the end of the day, it is a two-way traffic. We need to be serious about some of the conversations on social media. Kama wewe hutaki kuniskia, wewe ngoja fare,” he said, making it clear that mutual effort is what sustains relationships.

His sentiments echo a growing concern over the influence of social media on dating culture, where financial expectations are often amplified.

DJ Xclusive’s remarks have sparked debate, but his message remains consistent. He believes that genuine relationships cannot be measured in fare or transactions.
